Spacex did a mostly successful test flight of its new giant rocket, it didn't slow down quite enough when it was landing though .. I'm sure it's not as big as a Saturn V, but imagine being able to land one of those! -Mike

Truly amazing stuff.... Once again Elon Musk is very much my hero (And now a Texan too!) https://youtu.be/ap-BkkrRg-o?t=6487Skip to here if ya' just wanna see the Big Bada Boom (Which was still successful since this flight was to gather data, and in many ways they gather more data from a boom than from a landing.) https://youtu.be/ap-BkkrRg-o?t=6892Edit to add - And this thing was BIG! AND this is just the 2nd stage of the full Starship launch system... Approximate size comparison of the SN8 prototype vehicle that flew yesterday:

In your photo, is that a 1-1 size comparison? If so you’re right the whole of the new ship will be huge. Is there a rendition of the proposed ship anywhere?

Yup, it's HUGE! The SN8 prototype that flew yesterday was 70 meters (230 feet) tall. To have something as tall as a 21 story building flying around, flipping on its' belly, back upright, etc is truly amazing... The total Starship system (Original SpaceX development name was "BFR" for, I'm sure, Big Fine Rocket) will be 122 meters tall (400 feet)!

So from the 2 photos, it seems yesterday’s test was for the upper portion of the complete rocket/spacecraft.
I’ll have to find more info to see just what this thing is and where the actual crew cabin and stuff are.
Thanks for the info.

While stationed at Vandenberg AFB part of my job was to supply water pressure to the launch pad for Minuteman Missile launches, I saw at least 6 while I was there. I operated big diesel water pumps at a pump house not far from the pad, I would guess maybe 500 yds away. After starting the pumps and monitoring head pressure I was supposed to descend into a bunker for the launch.. so in my pea brain I decided to stand by the stairs at the entrance, figuring I could see an explosion and dive in there before any debris came my way. The concussion waves from even that smaller rocket buffeted through my body so strongly I was just awestruck. On a clear night I could watch as each stage happened all the way into space. I count myself lucky to experience that, as few people actually get to do it. My only regret is I never got up close to a Titan launch. Musk is a genius

That looked expensive. Better that it happened on an unmanned test flight.

It appeared to me the roll back to vertical and subsequent retro firing on descent was too late. It simply didn't have enough time to slow down, will be interesting to see what the post-flight analysis provides. I hope they make it available. Amazing engineering indeed.

The guy has an interesting hat hehehe, yeah he seems to be a bit of a character... Another feed here with a little more serious talkers, and seem to have a little more background info (Seems there's some ground issues they're fighting with, delaying the launch) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOQkk3ojNfM

That one I found on my Roku box on the search.
And yes the other guy said it was something to do with a water system but I did not listen that close.

I agree!! The key to success is surrounding yourself with the talent and brains to make it happen. Elon Musk is excellent at doing this. Rams

Normal launch. Safe landing. Then sometime after landing, burnt off unused fuel in an expeditious manner. They'll figure it out. I read Robert Goddard's book (his wife published his shop notes after he died). It was much the same - try something, then figure out why it blew up, fix that, then try it again until it doesn't blow up anymore.
