So I left the house early this morning expecting just another day. At 1:30 I stop home for a quick minute. As I’m driving through the neighborhood I see a tree company at my neighbors house who live behind me, they’re  having trees removed.

I stretch my time at home a little longer than I wanted but it’s worth it, they’re not only removing the trees in their front yard that have been sick and dying, but their taking down the monster trees in the back yard that lean toward my garage. These are new neighbors, they just bought the house 6 months ago. I’ve been sweating these 50’ monster trees for 15 years. Every tropical storm, blizzard, hurricane and Nor’ East’er we get these trees sway and loose branches. During hurricane Sandy I thought for sure they were coming down.

Keeping my fingers crossed the entire time I watched the guy in the tree cut sections off and lower them to the ground and sure enough I’m in the clear, finally. A quick stop turned into 90 minutes of watching, hoping and waiting. After seeing that last section drop I leave to finish my stuff and on the way home I,stop, and get them a thank you from me to them at the liquor store. A bottle nice bottle of white wine for the Mrs and a bottle of Jack Daniels single barrel for the Mr.  They were surprised and happy once I told them how big a relief they’ve given me.

It was a good day until Barbara told me the washer leaked on the laundry room floor when I got home.

I had a very similar problem.

I caught my neighbor (the one that owns the trees) and asked him if I could trim the trees hanging over my shed/property.    Told him I was afraid they would fall and damage or destroy my out building.

Told him I didn’t want any problems or hassles but, if that happened my insurance company would be contacting his.    I have no idea if he even has any insurance.    He told me to trim away or cut them down if I wanted to.

Problem solved.

my moms house the neighbors down one house has scrub bushes/vines etc. hanging over 5-6 feet into the yard unable to mow down there.  A few years ago they did a good job cutting them all down but left the roots.  2-3 years later they are back up and annoying as ever.  If going to go thru all that work a whole 60 feet or so 10 feet tall why not dig up the roots and do it right vs. scalping them down few inches up from the ground?   uglystupid2

I feel like cutting them down and tossing the remnants onto their own property to see how they like it?

When we moved in  to this place in 2010, there was a 50' tall lodgepole pine in the back corner of our lot.  It was starting to have issues from insect attacks.   We put up with for a couple of years, finally decided it had to go.  I have cut down a number of trees in my working time mostly on wildfires, but this tree would need to be felled in a very limited area without damaging fences and home.  So decide to have "experts" do the job.  Got several estimates, decide on one guy. he came with two others and a chipper.   One guy went up the tree cutting off branches as he went up, once at the top, he started cutting off sections as he came down.  In two hours the tree was history.   Every branch picked up, no damage done, and I was happy even though the billfold was a bit lighter.  I did get  lawn chair and cup of coffee to watch.

My understanding is that one's property extends upward.  If a growth starts in a neighbor's yard but extends over one's own the he is permitted to trim or eliminate the portion over his property.

I hope that's the case because I don't bother asking.  Of course there is still the problem of a tree that is entirely on the neighbor's property but presents a falling threat to one's own property.
