So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: December 29, 2020, 09:58:41 AM »

I’m not much into New Year’s Resolutions but, I do believe in settings goals and getting them into the successfully completed column.  I have a few projects I want to get done and some things I hope the resources are available to do.  Some of these goals depend on things I can not control but that doesn’t mean I won’t be working toward them just in case the “stars” line up.

What are your goals for 2021?

My 2021 goal is to survive the 2020 New Year's eve Giant Asteroid Impact Storm.

Last thing on the 2020 Bingo list.

OOoo, wait, Exploding Sun. That is the last thing on the list. Must be the finale.

But goals for 2021 are mostly health related. Got to get on it.

1. Lose some weight and get in better shape.
1. Find new work. My layoff is imminent, delayed by incoming projects, but it's time for a change anyway.
3. Find another motorcycle. This fall I bought a 1978 Suzuki PE175 as part 1 of my 2-part plan. Over the next few months I want to find a 200-250cc dual sport, like a Suzuki DR200 or a Yamaha XT225. This way my son and I can ride the trails together, and he'll have a bike to ride if he gets his MC licence. He'll be 16 in a month.
4. Get some projects done around the house, including replacing the back fence and finishing touches on a basement reno.
5. Ride a few thousand km on my Valkyrie.

How do you like the 175 ? Sorry about the impending lay off. Maybe you'll land with a company that doesn't have a liquor shrine ?

Can’t think of anything too huge.

I’d say quit smoking but that’s a whole nuther issue, been there, done that.

Maybe find an exercise to counter the smoking  uglystupid2

Possibly find a way to bury the hatchet with my father.

I’d like to make it get more riding in, maybe that will be it.

Get the house updated in a few places would be nice and long over due.

Try for a very long over due vacation, if not well there’s always next year.

One of my projects this year is to transform my “Stock”, (as in livestock trailer) into a ramp load motorcycle/utility trailer.   Something I can transport, secure and keep protected from the elements during inclement weather.   The trailer currently has cargo style doors that Jerry (Bigwolf) and I are transforming into a ramp door that will still work as a cargo style door when I choose to use it that way.   We’re about half way done.

When completed, I will be able to load up without having to carry along and use ramps.   Hopefully our ideas will work.

In all seriousness, I do have constant goals.

First and foremost is to always try and be a good man.  I rely on the 10 commandments, avoiding the 7 deadly sins, keeping my word and always telling the truth (except the small lies we tell to not offend or hurt people's feelings), and to try to help people whenever I can (but not be an enabler).  To be generous in mind and spirit.  Throw in the Boy Scout oath, law and motto, and my oath as a serving military officer to my country and constitution.  To try and consult this moral compass whenever necessary in going about my days on this earth.

To never let my temper or emotions override these rules, and good common sense.

And then to a lesser extent.

To keep my home, machines, property, finances and body in good working order, and not fall into disrepair... or decrepitude.  Which lately has been a lot more work than I care to do.

I'm good at creating long lists of things to be done.  But it's depressing to look at every day, so I hide it from myself to keep my spirits up.

Jess,
Was just pulling your chain.   We all have some lower hanging fruit on the tree that’s easier to get at and some at much loftier heights.

Another goal of mine is to actually host that Mississippi Madness event we tried to do last year but had to cancel due to COVID 19 restrictions.   I am working on that or at least planning and checking on things almost every day.
Hope you can attend.

I’ve only ridden the Suzuki for a couple of hours at the end of November, and it’s my first two-stroke and my first dirt bike, so my opinion should carry very little weight, but I like it! It’s very loud, and the clutch doesn’t fully disengage, such that it will only start in neutral, and I have to give it gas when I pop it in gear, or else it will stall. A good thing is that there is good online support for Suzuki PE enduros.

Thanks for posting this question, it made me think for a day.

I volunteer on three nonprofit Boards, two of them have been long term.  My resolution is to try and push through a few initiatives this year that have stalled that I believe can make a difference.  And if I can't get them through, or feel I'm not making a strong enough difference . . . back away from the Board quietly and let someone else take the position.

Interesting. I assumed we all (or 99.8%) started on dirt bikes. The clutch is likely just a misadjusted cable. Or maybe a stretched out cable. That bike shouldn't be overly loud. Check if they removed the spark arrester. A good quality oil helps a lot with those Yamahas. I liked Torco. But I don't know if they even make it anymore.

I’ve been looking at a lot of used motorcycle ads in the last couple of months, and nothing has appeared in that level of pristine condition!

I got lucky on this one. A friend knew I had been looking for a 600
for years and saw this 500 on Letgo in the car section.
Original owner bought it new in 1984 and rode it less than a year
then covered it up in his heated basement for 35 years.
Had to rebuild the carbs and put a new swing arm chain guide on
it. Didn't even wash it. Love these old bikes from the 70's and 80's.
Hard to find a nice one as they were rode to death.

Surely 2021 will be the year that I conclude the house remodel that has been an ongoing project for 2 years now. Lots of loose ends to tie up but I believe I’m done tearing things out! I should be able to complete everything in the first quarter.

My selfish goals will be to get the Valkyrie roadworthy again and/or add a Goldwing to the stable. I also need to develop a plan and strategy to get my Chevelle moved to Richmond and start the restoration process again, then there’s my Impala SS sitting in my mothers garage that needs to be put into roadworthy condition.

Or maybe I just need to sell some stuff!

I'm not one for New Years resolutions normally, this year could be different.

Anger over things I can't control has become a problem, for me and for my relationship. I've been attempting to curb anger and frustration this new year.

So far I've failed miserably..

Fail fast, fail often as a strategy?..

We'll see

This problem, frustration and anger at the things I cannot control, is best battled with placing my faith in God, and remembering my purpose, well-described in the Westminster Shorter Catechism:
  Q. What is the chief end of man?
  A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.
I need to glorify God despite external circumstances, all of which serve God’s purposes, the vast majority of which I am ignorant. E.g., somehow COVID, my job layoff, my barely-adult child’s estrangement, etc., all serve His purposes, regardless of my ignorance of them. My purpose is to be faithful to Him and enjoy Him in the midst of them. Faithfulness might mean working hard to alleviate my problems, tilling the soil and planting the seeds that He waters with rain and heats with the sun to produce a crop, or to be content with the things completely out of my control, trusting His sovereignty. My anger demonstrates my lack of faith. Am I consistent in this? No.

Thanks Gryphon Rider,
I had this conversation with my girl this morning, we're in sync as we battle demons, I have more than she to deal with. I told her I admire her strength in dealing with all she has to at work, it's much worse than I experience, yet she handles it better.

I want to punch and kick the demons head on, literally fighting them.. recently I had a nightmare where I was pushing against a demon and was powerless, as though I wasn't there.. after my girl awakened me from my struggle I went to pee in a half awake, half dream state. That's when I realized our rock is surrounded by evil now, and I asked The Almighty for help.. help for myself and those I care for, as well as humanity in general.

Early this morning we made some progress as we agreed to strengthen our pact.. our home is our sanctuary, and evil influence can't follow us there, it only has power if we give it power.

Love and Light crush evil in its tracks, and that will be our focus as we navigate through this life, and during these times.

Thank You

No.

Thank you for this reminder.

It seems up is down and wrong is right nowadays.  I try to keep in mind that, even in this era, the Most High is at the reigns and the universe is unfolding as it should.  God is good.  Always.

Pay off debt and get another bike.

A truly admirable goal.   I was debt free until I ran into that Ram 3500 I had been looking for a couple of years.   When I found it, I just had to pull the trigger on it.   Brand new but not the truck the auto industry has convinced the buying public they want.   It had been special ordered by someone in early 2018 but the deal fell through.  It sat on the dealership lot for two years.   They were desperate to see it sold.   I told them if they brought that price down enough I would drive it home.

It took three months for them to come down to what I would pay but they finally did.   I’m not debt free but damn close.  Looking forward to seeing that new bike.  Maybe ride it to the Mississippi Meet, Greet and Eat in April?

Luckily, I have no long term debt.. stopped using credit cards over 20 years ago and haven't looked back.

Unfortunately, I have to sell the Wing if I want another bike, no room for a third machine. Having two bikes is nice in case one is down for maintenance, but honestly, I'm trying to cut down on all extra stuff, including vehicles. Registration, insurance, maintenance etc is getting to be too much.

So the goal going forward?
