Ride Safe, Be Kind

Hi All,

Has anyone had any issues with Jumbo Strong bag lids and Ultimate seats?  Specifically, will the lid clear the Ultimate Rider and passenger seats when opening fully?  I have the seat already and am thinking about the bags but they won't do me any good if I can't open them.  Changing the seat is not an option.  I love my Ultimate.

I have the jumbo bags and ultimate seats. The lid will touch the riders pillion when opening and closing, but just barley. Wife and I both are careful to just pull lid a little outward to clear the seat while closing. Had them for over ten years and still no scuff marks on seat.

My OEM bags touch my Ultimate seat when I open them. I like it.
I open my bags and they stay open. When I've had other seats
(a Corbin and a Russell) on there, and the lids just stayed all
floppy when I opened them, I hated it...

Wouldn't it depend on which Ultimate seat you have?

I think there's three kinds for the Valkyrie. I have the middle kind...

Plus 3 kinds of Valkyries, (well, real Valkyries Roll Eyes)  and 2 kinds of saddlebag lids Wink

The kind with no saddlebags and the kind where the lid falls off when
you ride down the road don't count  Wink ...

Most have either Lowboy or Bigboy, and while the Bigboy is 2" taller, I really don't know about wider.

Bag lid clearance can always be remedied by switching to interstate cable connections and ditching the tourer hinges.  BUT, if you have 97-98/9 tourer bags, the inside of the lids do not have the interstate cable attachment points.  You can do a workaround by running slightly longer home made cables to the latch hardware, but it's a PITA.

It remains unclear (to me) whether the 99 Tourer lids were the same as the new 99 interstate lids, or if it took until 00 before they all started using the 99 interstate lids.  Many small changes in the 99 interstate were adopted in the Standards and Tourers (like one piece rear end dampers), but when that happened is not always clear, and may have even happened in mid model year's assembly.

Just like both my 99 interstates have Made in USA stamped on the engine block, but not all 99 interstates have that stamp.

Though this discussion is irrelevant to Tsukayu bags.

Finally, all aftermarket bags look better mounted as tight to the bike as possible.  BUT, if there was a small clearance issue (with lid hinges), adding a washer or two to the Tsukayu (Strong/Jumbo Strong) upper bag mounts would likely solve the problem.

Look this link over.  It even says different length spacers come with the mount kit.

Also, if you scroll around on the Tsukayu website, you can find pictures of their bags on different bikes.  Right now, the only pics of Jumbos on Valks is with OE and Corbin seats.
