We decided to hit the beach area yesterday, weather was cool and mild with a light breeze. In the sun it was warm enough to catch some vitamin D. Surf was poppin with some good wave action.. once again making it worth living in the belly of the beast. Who knows, I may be able to talk her into another ride inland tomorrow

Bret,
Funny... we live on opposite sides of a vast continent in very different cultures, have little in common in terms of backgrounds or shared experiences... Yet, we are clearly kindred spirits! Thanks for posting this... I easily connect with the view, but more with the state of mind associated with them!!!

Hey Bruce! Good to hear from you! Somehow being at the beach resets and centers my spirit, I run for hours each week at the beach, being barefoot and running along the shore break I'm in and out of the water. I believe the ocean has great power to heal both body and spirit, the way I see it is each water molecule touching my body is connected to every other water molecule in the oceans around the globe.. what that means I don't know.. it's just a feeling I get that it means something more than can be explained. Being in the mountains also has great power, as well as the desert.. nature is healing. Preaching to the choir here I know brother, but keep that spirit, feeling and visions of your vast experiences and use them to your great advantage in getting well, the power of our mindset cannot be understated when it comes to health and wellness. Peace and wellness to you my friend!

Hey Bret, your post puts me in mind of my 5 years at March AFB CA (87-92). Of course, I loved my job and my wife and my base housing (and my 86' Harley and 69' Corvette), but without question the great year round weather more than anything else just lent itself to a happy and healthy lifestyle. I mean, aside from two weeks of mildly chilly rainy weather in Feb, you could just count on every singe day being great (not counting the mountains of San Gorgonio and San Juacinto, which were fantastic riding, but you could get in snow storms up there). And Palm Springs got downright HOT in summer. Pushing 40, I quit smoking and ran 700 miles one year, and got in the best shape of my life, since HS football. (Dropped a little weight too, though that was never a problem as the military insisted you not be a fat boy, and made you get on the scales and run 3 miles (SAC) in decent time twice a year to prove it.) The politics were just getting bad, but you could still go to the LA county fairgrounds for the biggest and best gun shows in the country (Great Westerns), and great car shows too. But then they started AR registration, which I didn't do, living on an exclusive federal enclave and a Citizen of MI. But I never took it off base again either. I do miss those days (and times). I could never live there now, but I like to think about when I did. Base housing. And to change things up, the wife and I would tool down the 15, get off at Fallbrook, go in the back door at the Naval Weapons Station, drive across and get a simple BOQ room at Pendelton Marine base, and hang out on the Base Del Mar beach, and party at the San Louis Rey O club for dinner and drinking. I guess living there has kind of gone the way of the old March AFB flight-line control tower. lol That's not good.

We were practically neighbors for a couple years, I moved from Santa Barbara to San Diego in 1989. Haven't been to March AFB for many moons, it looks like base housing there is pretty dang nice. A Harley and a Corvette? I'd say that would be a fine way to get around! I've trained my whole life but never was much for running, then a few years ago I decided to get into it more consistently. It took my calves some months to adapt to the pounding but now things are better. Last week I ran 23 1/2 miles, which is 5 miles over my usual at least, the left calf is pissed at me so I'm scraping it this week and doing heel drops along with some foam rolling this week. All part & parcel to the game, it literally takes years to remodel tissue as we adapt to new stimulus. Next week I'll see my buddy who's a kinesiologist, I suspect the calf whining is originating in the glute/hip flexor area. Living here is certainly bittersweet, and honestly, the only thing keeping my sanity is being out in nature, training and riding the Blue Angel. I want to get up riding in Central and Northern Cal this year, my buddy may come out from Kentucky on his Road Glide and we can do some exploring for awhile.. that's the plan anyway. I love it here but honestly, the only way I'll stay is to go underground more than less to limit exposure to whims of the state. Looks like someone buzzed the tower a little too close haha

Of course, March AFB was closed many years ago as an active base (too much air traffic), though certain functions still remain. It appears (some of) base housing may be available for rentals now.
I didn't really run, I did 2 minute quarters. Being an ex track man, I ran the track for many months, before hitting the streets and trails. With me, it was always bad and sore ankles and chronic Achilles tendonitis. The track may be boring, but it was soft packed dirt and always level, so easier on the legs/feet and much less trip hazard, and easier to calculate any improvement. I never got treatment, and ran though the pain, but it was fully 6 months before it began to hurt less. I worked up to 3 then 5 miles every other day, and once did two 10 mile days back to back, but the knees hated that, and it was more destructive than healthy. But at all distances, I kept right at 2 minute quarter miles, a good steady pace to maintain. Finally though, the streets and trails were much more interesting, and not always in direct sunlight like our track.
Now, I walk, sometimes. And amazingly, the ankles and A. tendons are no longer a problem.
Motivation to get off my ass is the problem.
PS: If you really want to be off grid or underground, you need to be more careful about your posts (here and everywhere). They are reading it you know (or saving it to read later if you get focused on).

Wow! 8 min miles! All your miles are at that pace? I run at an 11-12 min/mi pace, roughly.. that keeps the HR down to more a recovery level than something requiring recovery in and of itself. I use running for recovery and aerobic development mainly, it also makes the legs very strong as you know. My mentor said something that stuck with me, 'biology doesn't trump physics'.. so in practice the heart's left ventricle can fill and empty fairly completely up to twice per second, any more than that and the pump can't overcome the physics of moving blood through the pipes fast enough. This also dovetails with Phil Maffetone's formula of roughly 180 minus your age as a target HR. i sprinkle in some faster bursts now and then but overall my pace is steady. For recovery I've used Dr. Tanaka's Niko Niko run method with great results also, slow running at a lower HR.. he's set marathon records with an ultra low HR which is quite impressive. These days I'm comfortable running for distance at around 5-6 mph., I usually do around 6 miles in about 65 mins. Steadily I'm covering longer distances at a lower average HR, aside from higher wind, hot temps etc.. then the HR calculus goes out the window. You should get back to walking daily, benefits from walking with purpose for time are countless as you know, and it's essential for good mental health as well I believe. I tend toward overtraining at times, so I consciously throttle it back and maintain a more disciplined schedule. I could talk all day on training, health and fitness.. By under the radar I mostly meant income etc. I hear what you're saying and agree interwebs posting is easy pickins, the way I figure it, they have all they need on any of us if they want to target us.
