Yesterday was a day that started pretty well (at least until the coup attempt...), with the confirmation that the Democrats were taking control of the Senate.
I honestly think that a GOP led Senate would rather see the economy collapse when the mortgage payment moratorium ends in August this year than to do something to help the economy and the families of those Americans that are behind their mortgage payments, as Mitch McConnell is deeply invested in making any Democrat president to fail.
Needless to say that if all those houses that the owners are behind the monthly payment end up in the market, we would have a realestate meltdown version 2.0, accompanied by the many side effects like: a) Lots of people unemployed. b) Depressed economy. c) Weaker dollar (compared to Euro, etc). d) Decreased house ownership.
I'm sure that with a democratic president + senate + house something will be done to help those families to avoid loosing their homes.
Most importantly, with such low interest rates (and it should stay low for at least 1 - 2 years), that also means that if you own equity in a home, it is going to increase in value since hard assets are appreciating.
Yesterday started out so well. I was thrilled that Warnock won his seat and was waiting for Osoff's race to be called. Then the rest of the day went to poop. A real roller coaster of a day. Demoting McConnell goes a long way toward good things to happen. But he's not going to be sitting on his hands. Seriously? You are happy that this guy got elected? Yesterday, a firsthand account confirmed the child abuse that occurred under Raphael Warnock’s purview at Camp Farthest Out in the early 2000s. Warnock was arrested in 2002 for obstructing a police investigation into suspected child abuse that occurred under his leadership. Arresting officers from the Child and Sexual Assault Unit said they had “never encountered resistance like [Warnock’s] at all.” https://gagop.org/2020/12/29/warnock-silent-on-allegations-of-child-abuse-at-his-summer-camp/https://www.foxnews.com/politics/warnock-2002-child-abuse-investigationhttps://www.cbs46.com/news/warnocks-character-questioned-in-dredged-up-bodycam-of-dispute-with-ex-wife/article_381d746c-44cf-11eb-a528-dfe7b4b11960.htmlApparently, as long as a candidate has a D behind their name the bar for ethical behavior is very low. Hypocrisy is alive and well within those who lean to the left.

@Robert: there are 3 things that I hate about the Obama administration.
a) They decided to help banksters, but not people who were losing their homes. b) The violations of basic privacy with NSA spying on the American public. c) The exponential increase of drone strikes.
I really *hope* that this time the Democrats help the people and not big corps/financial banks.
Otherwise, in 2 years, it is sure they will lose the control of the house/senate (like it happened in 2010).

Damn... must be good. Meanwhile, in Kommiefornia buying a home is almost impossible. Unless you did it eons ago or have family help to pay the 20% or struck gold with a unicorn startup.

That is one of the few weak spots for The Republic of Texas.... Yes, we have no state income tax, but between county, city, school district, Robin Hood school equalization tax, local hospital tax, local community college tax, I looked it up. I pay $7,486.51 a year in property taxes, and going up fast.

On a crappy little house on a quarter acre that cost $17,500 when built and sold in 1960. At that rate, in original dollars, it would be paid off every four years. And there's annual personal property taxes on our cars and bikes too, which go down a bit with age; the Valks have bottomed out at $52 a year (but will go no lower), and the van $400+. Fairfax County annual budget this year - $4.4 billion. (probably more than a number of small countries) All brought to me by my loving friends in the DNC. And of course $4460 is probably the monthly bill in NYC and CA.

You have correctly identified their avenues of getting that revenue. While no income tax does sound good, it is just another way for taxation. Rams

I pay $7k/yr property taxes. Half of that are school taxes. I don't have children. Why I'm I paying for other people's children? teachers getting 80-100k per yr no medical payment for nine months of work. and their retirement is almost that much with full medical.
here in NJ those tax dollarr go directly to the powerful NJ state democrat teachers union and then they skim off of that for their wealth and then send the rest to the towns. talk about a corrupt system.

Why anyone would live in those other places is beyond me.

I live in TN about 35 miles west of Nashville in Dickson county. i have a 1000 sq. ft. house a 30 by 20 garage and 2 acres. i pay 450 a month into an equity account. that covers house payment of 225.00 and insurance and property taxes. Every time i get ready to move back to Texas i think of my daughters home costing them about 350 a month just for taxes. I am stuck here i guess.

I have been encouraging Kali to join the military.
Personally, I applaud both you and Kali for considering this. Such a commitment will give her some good life experiences, allow her to mature, assist her in her educational opportunities and broaden her horizons to a certain extent. I sincerely believe every 18 year old should spend two years of in the service of their country. Too many enjoy the freedoms ensured by others efforts and sacrifices and never give back to the nation that provided them with so much opportunity. Both of my son and daughter have served (without my saying anything), makes me proud they did their part. Rams

I'm amazed that no one seems to be pointing out that what your state government has been doing has the most affect on the housing situation. Everyone seems to think that the Fed Gov is there to bail out the states, (which they probably will now that Biden is president).
It's the states that decide on what emergency measures to enforce during the lock down, state taxes have more affect on local economies than Fed taxes. It's always bothered me that the Fed collects taxes then doles them back out to the states.

Back when we had a mortgage while the democrats were in control during the carter years our interest rate was 13.25%. The economy was so bad there was no reasonable mortgage money available. We paid that damn thing off as fast as we could, and, at that rate it wasn't as fast as we would have liked.
