Twitter, Facebook, and other mass communication apps/options?

I don't pretend to know all the different mass media communication apps/options are out there.  Is apps the correct term?   I'm just curious as to what everyone uses.   I personally only use Facebook and not much on that.   I only joined Facebook to stay up on Valkyrie stuff and am finding it to be a very frustrating thing offering very little and doubt I'll stay with it much longer.

I'm happy to add others to the list, I just don't know what they are.

Admittedly, this is easier with very few friends or family.

And this reminds me of group rides when we stop for a break, and every single guy but me gets on his cell phone for 20 minutes.  I never had any kind of cell phone in my life either, and I don't feel disadvantaged in the least.  Cell phones (and social media) always seemed to me to be kind of a dog collar.  Though I like dogs.  But I never wear shirts with collars either

I use Facebook to communicate with family and friends.  I have a Twitter account but I only use it to follow tweets from emergency management, fire departments, etc. for work.  Often when there is a disaster, Twitter has more up to the minute information directly from those agencies than any other form of news.  I have never sent a tweet, just read feeds from those agencies.

I had a Twitter account, I deactivated it in solidarity with our president.

I use Facebook more than I care to admit, mostly family and friends.

I've been on MeWe for several years (Gun trading groups are allowed there) but have become more socially active on it, and have started to be a little active on Parler lately.

When my kids were younger they started a FB for me to play some farming game, I never used it and it's since been deleted. Recently I got a Parler acct but don't really know much about it, other than it's not censored.

I have an Iphone though I've always resisted being in the Apple box, now I cut gaggle out of everything I can.

Just for the record I voted the way I did because I could not choose three.  I have access to Facebook, MeWe, and Parler. 

I use Facebook to keep track of some of my post business associates (people I worked with for many years) and my personal family that have yet to see the light. 

I don't have a real heavy presence of MeWe yet but will work on that, making postings to both MeWe and Facebook. 

There is a Southern Valkyrie Riders group on MeWe.  MeWe seems to be a little less user friendly than Facebook but that may because I have been using Facebook for a couple of years.  But, I never buy anything I see advertised on Facebook (that's for the people that monitor this forum for intelligence information).  I also have a Amazon Prime Membership that just renewed in December of last year.  It will be my last. 

I will not buy anything from Amazon that can be gotten somewhere else for about the same price. (again for the people that monitor this forum for intelligence information) and will not renew my Amazon Prime Membership when it comes due this year. 

Walmart is challenging Amazon and they are more or less politically natural.  That is where I will be shopping on line. 

They (Walmart) have an interesting delivery system.  Ordered something yesterday, it came to day, my personal car.  Guy drives up and drops it off.  Happened before from Walmart. 

I ordered something a couple of weeks ago, again from Walmart, and it came in the mail in an Amazon package .   I found that was interesting.  Walmart got the profit and Amazon paid for the shipping envelope.

I don't use any of those listed. The only thing I use (with my wife only) is google hangouts, otherwise the only "messenging" I do is SMS on my cell phone or email.

I should be more conscious of security as I do use Facebook practically daily. I do little posting and almost never initiate a discussion. I do appreciate Facebook marketplace, much more than Craigslist. I have bought and sold and so far all transactions have been good. I do have family on Facebook but they are similar users to me, they don’t constantly post about where they are who they are with, or what mundane thing they happen to be doing. It’s a tool that I use. I would happily switch to something else that meets my criteria.

was... ouch. My only computers have ever been Thinkpads... remember those wifi
cards half the size of a pack of cigarettes you slid into that slot, I don't even remember
what the slot was called :-) ...

Anywho... I submitted to Windows up until eight or so years ago... stuff like Fedora (that's
what I use) and probably ubuntu all work with no struggle now...

Only reason I remember it was because I remembered this version of the acronym: People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms.

(And I had to support laptops running Windows '95 in a corporate environment back in the day.... That's probably why I'm a little crochety now.)

Those Data Processing Operators had the most boring job on the ship. They would have to sit there for hours typing on a punch card machine while I sat around drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. But, they could (and did) screw over anyone they wanted by making a “mistake” on the data for their paycheck.

no, I don't think the Navy even had programmers back then. I sat around waiting for something to break. Occasionally cleaning the tape to tape machines. We weren't supposed to smoke in there, that crap got all gooey in the tape readers. But, we had a Chief that smoked 3 packs a day and he was in charge. Our computer was a Univac something, I'm thinking a UYK-20. Big as a small car, with mostly removable little plug in transistor boards. They were old then, even by Navy standards. Probably designed late 50's early 60's ?

I like Fedora very much, these days I use Peppermint. Literally any distro is pretty good anymore. I loved F-14 and was bummed when it went away, I only use long term release stuff now. It's a blast to play with different distros.

Provided your machine is powerful enough (has enough memory and disc space, CPU good enough) you could use a VM with either as the host and the other as client....

I used Virtual Box for awhile, but there were hardware comm problems and such.. just wasn't worth it for me as a replacement for a standalone Windows machine. I played so much with different OS's, partitions and dual monitors etc. These days I'm too busy to even think about anything but keeping it simple.
I used to break my Linux just to practice fixing it.. maybe that's why I'm divorced :/

Access to good connectivity is controlled by giants like AT&T. If they come back
on-line, they'll be metaphorically running on some cast-off PCs on a dial-up.

I think Internet freedom will have to be found... offshore  ...
