I have recently made the transition from cigarettes to pipes. I don't inhale the pipe tobacco and have learned to take my time and enjoy some Black Cavendish (Captain Black Dark) with a little Knob Hill whiskey and a book at the end of a long day (vs a quick cigarette every hour or so). It's almost as zen as riding for me. Also, I see how collecting pipes could turn into a hobby. Currently I have a corn cob and a briar. I'm looking at a churchwarden and maybe a gourd calabash too. Anyone else smoke a pipe?

Man I wish I could smoke cigarettes, I used to dabble in them and smoke some while golfing, they're also great with whiskey.. butt...... no good. I guess a pipe could be something to look into, my uncle smoked a pipe and I always loved the smell as a kid growing up. Cigars don't do anything for me. dunno why

Yeah, the smell is a huge bonus. The other day, I came inside after somking the pipe and Alyssa snuggled up to me and said "Mmm, you smell GOOD!" I never got that with cigarettes.

I've dabbled in pipes, but found them too much work, and I'm too lazy, so I'm more of a cigar guy now... (Quit cigarettes... ~15 years ago)

From Cheech and Chong (or was it Fireside Theater?). Cop: Papers please. Guy: I only have a pipe man. _________________ I smoked a pipe in college. My dorm roommate was not a fan. Smoking a pipe while riding is not healthy for your eyes (only half helmets for me). I have some beautiful hand carved meerschaums from Turkey. But they are for looking at, not smoking. IMHO, the best smoking pipe is a simple one with bowl far enough from your nose and eyes to not be irritating (and cheap enough to not care if it is lost) (and not so heavy it causes jaw fatigue). Then there is getting cleaner fluid and pipe cleaners, and learning to keep it in good order. And tobacco that stays lit. And it was my experience that the best smelling tobacco (burned) tasted like dung (like cherry), and the best smoking tobacco might not smell so good. And even if you only burn tobacco in it, it's best not to leave them in plain view in your vehicles. Even the wacky tobbaccy states frown on driving under the influence.

My Grandfather smoked a pipe all his life. He got cancer in the jaw and was hard to look at after having one side of his jaw removed. But it smelled good.

Started chewing Copenhagen as a teen. Started smoking to quit chewing. Then started chewing again to quit smoking. Now I do both, depending on what I’m doing. Usually only 5 or 6 cigarettes a day. When riding in the summer, chewing is better as you can do it while riding.
Wish I could quit it but I justify it by saying for the amount I actually use, I get more benefit due to the stress relief than harm. I know that’s wrong but it’s what I tell myself. I haven’t had a drink in 2 years so I figure I gotta have something bad in my life.
Never tried a pipe. I do enjoy the smell but many don’t. That’s kinda what I enjoy about chewing. You can do it without bothering anyone else and without anyone even knowing you’re doing it.
I do appreciate though how pipe/cigar smokers can light it up in the evening or on the weekend and not be dependent on it all the time like other tobacco habits.

The subtle expectorating can be a give away? Lol. If you only take a small pinch, you don’t have to spit, except for one or 2 at the very start.

I smoked for 20 years or so. I chewed for 15. Well, I did the pussy kind of chewing. Skoal Bandits was my thing. Couldn't handle the real stuff getting all up in my stuff. I never spit. I considered that wasteful, I wanted my money's worth. I was so bad that for about 5 of those years I smoked 2 packs of Kool Milds concurrently along with a pack of Skoal Bandits Wintergreen. Back in the day, we smoked all day while cutting, grinding meat. I've never been hooked on any drugs or liquor, so I don't know if it's harder to quit, but the cigarettes were very hard to give up. I could have never moderated my intake like you are able to. It's been 20 years since I quit both, and I could still easily take them up again. (Do bongs count as a pipe ?)
