We are our own worst enemy!

Why do you think my profile on Facebook is so little info....   We all reveal way too much personal information, even on this forum.

I dont think you may understand Meat, the information they got was personal information the site had stored on it, like drivers licenses, credit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers. When they cut off parlor the security company dropped the ball and allowed all that personal information to be stolen. Many on the site were innocent people there only common thread is they were most all conservative.

We have a major problem with free speech and the actions to eliminate that has now had financial cost and ruined lives because of it. I dont think your for that.

Not exactly, the data was available due to the poor API used by the client to contact the cloud servers. Worst still, the data was not encrypted.

I guess Parler went cheap while hiring programmers.

Please learn what "free speech" is. I sympathize with any that may lose money due to personal info hacked. The way I understood the story was they were using it to catch people who posted selfies while trespassing, rioting in the Capitol Building

No one on the site expressed anything that was warranted to have a governmental agency to look into them.

This hack was by anyone who knew how to hack and expose all sorts of information from those who view they opposed.

Your understanding was wrong and why would you think that a governmental agency would need to have a failure of a system to be able to look into anyone?

Free speech means you don't surrender your rights when you express views contrary to someone else. If anyone takes advantage of that it means they are a thief or a social justice warrior in the worst way.

You if you really desire fairness and justice you should be as appalled at this, just as much as the protest at the capital.

per the link Savago posted ;
"The data might prove valuable to law enforcement since many who participated in the riots deleted their posts and videos afterward. The data scrape includes deleted posts, meaning that Parler stored user data after users deleted it.

a sample of what's in there pic.twitter.com/5o8CBRrmgc

— crash override (@donk_enby) January 9, 2021
Parler, a far-right friendly site, was among the key candidates to host President Donald Trump’s social media presence as Twitter and Facebook suspended his accounts for instigating violence.

Parler, which claims to have over 10 million users, has lax rules over content, making the platform very attractive to far-right groups. Google and Apple removed Parler’s smartphone app from their app stores, claiming that the platform allowed posting that seeks to “incite ongoing violence in the U.S..” Amazon took similar measures, removing Parler from its hosting service."

Funny you never did this at any other time like Antifa or BLM, when they were burning down cities and destroying lively hoods. I guess trespassing is worse that the killings that went on there.

The leak was wrong, regardless of the reason, so now you declare yourself a social justice warrior and want to go after these people based on an illegal hack.

To me if your going to say one act is wrong then using what was gained illegally is wrong too. What is the motive then?

If you are going to do anything like this then why don't you use your talents to either proving or disproving the corruption that exisits in government and in these public officials.

Do you know who are the real terrorists, the ones in congress that pass bills like Obama care and the new bail out dont read it and cost the tax payer trillions of dollars. In Chicago, 768 people have been killed this year. That is 252 more than 2019. The failed policies of these supposed admins that cost lives everyday. If you really want to say who is a terrorist, Vietnam killed thousands, and yet we did not gain and our young men were sent to war that is a terrorist. What hypocrites to think that by exposing the personal details of ordinary citizens they are justice warriors and not confront the real issues.

Obama care, one bill that Pelosi said we have to pass it to find out whats in it personally cost me over  100k, I wonder how many others this failed program, not read, passed, and inflicted on many cost others. I don't hear anyone crying for those that could not afford insurance but still had to pay a fine. That is legal terrorism done by those who don't do their job and think they are the top of the heap.

WE had 5 deaths 3 from natural causes with over a million people and more like two million and because they wandered around the halls of a stone and mortar structure and did not respect those who are the real killers you find yourself a social justice warrior standing for a cause because these people want this type of stuff to stop.

Well that does it for me.

There are people who are unhappy about other people rooting around in the government's
stuff but these same people seem to be fine with the government rooting around in some
people's stuff.

I wonder if these are the people who treated the criminal Edward Snowden like a hero when
he stole information that indicated the government might be rooting around in
everyone's stuff?

Were they members of the government who did the "scraping" ? (whatever that is) I took it as others who were giving info to the FBI, etc.

Another "some people" post...

The FBI is warning in an internal memo of the possibility of
armed protests at all 50 state capitols and in Washington, D.C.,
ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s Jan. 20 inauguration, a
law-enforcement official said.

Most of us probably think it is bad for political transitions in
the USA to seem like banana republic politics. If something
like the above happens, I guess some people will think it
is the fault of the armed protesters, and some other people
will think it is the fault of our dysfunctional politicians.

I never voted for O'Bama, but I'll admit that when he got
in I "hoped" he'd be different. Then, right away, he oversaw
and was happy about the 100% partisan health care bill that
got jambed through. 100% yes by Democrats, 100% no by
Republicans. What if, instead, he'd thrown it back in their
faces and insisted they'd come up with something bi-partisan?
I thought it then, and think it now, that it would have been
awesome. He proved himself, to me, right away, to be a
regular politician.

Trump is an irregular politician. We need a whole bunch of
irregular politicians, but what we'll probably get is more
of the same, or perhaps we'll get a mixed bag of cowed
Republicans who go along with the un-changed Democrats
so that they can keep on getting along...

Where were all the social justice warriors when this was happening, (Crickets chirping in the background)

I am going to change the term social justice warriors since we know that free speech is dead on social media and call them media robots, a much better term. Knowing that the real case of free speech on social media would be a great place to direct their efforts, yet they seem to skip this also. I thought about the terms of parrots, terrorists, non critical thinkers, misled, clueless even unpatriotic but media robots seem to fit. Since its not a slur, since media is always right then they are simply echoing the correctness of the situation that media reflects. You know kind of like a newscaster on say CNN maybe.

@Serk: politics aside, you known computers.

Unlike FB/twitter that is still online, Parler is down and their data would be wiped out after AWS was no longer available for them.

Also, there was no 'hacking' or 'exploiting' on getting the data. It was all available by using the poor Parler API.

If there is someone here to blame, I would say that it was the poor tech of Parler (i.e. not encrypting the user data to protect the user's privacy).

Would you suggest that researchers wait for the government (FBI) to come months later and ask AWS for backups that are long gone?

Do you agree that preserving this data is one important tool to punish the people who invaded the Capitol and murdered people?

For people who are not familiar with computer science (CS), I have one analogy to what happened: it is like walking nude in front of your house and later complaining that people in the street snapped photos of your ass. No expectation of privacy in a public space.

This just goes to show the owners of apps like Parler have ZERO concern over user's privacy or the security of their information.

These apps pop up and exist for ONE reason - money. It has zero to do with freedom of speech or providing a safe space for it. These types of apps do nothing but farm people's information for eventual sale to the highest bidders.

Yup that may be correct I dont know anyone who does not want to make money or do things for free, but at least there will be no censorship of conservative views simply because you dont agree.

As for the girl walking down the street if she is drunk or got hit in the head and you go up to her and get a feel or take pictures for the purpose to sell them you are the nasty one. Since it was not a normal situation and you are profiting or acting as a social justice warrior from a situation that was beyond that persons control. Like taking advantage when someone is down, nice going.

Why didn't you guys do this in Seattle, or Oregon? Because you agreed with pillage that was occurring. Just nasty and a great representation of the beliefs of the dems. Do either one of you belong to Antifa?

Once they are done with us they will chew both of you up and spit you out and both of you will may actually say what happened. We are the opposition you are just plain nothing to them just a step to get what they want.

What its not about is a democratic society or breaking a law, what it is about is control total control and using manipulation to get the saps to think they are doing good battling the very ones that take the hit for those who are to dumb to realize what is happening. Like I said robots.

I'm not Serk but I am a 40 year computer specialists.

To answer your questions:

Yes.  That's how the system works.

No.  Murdered people?  Really?  Where are these "facts" coming from?  The murder (single) was done by a policeman.

Your analogy is likely misleading as these service providers generally commit to protecting personal information in their contracts.

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, 42.

The guy was a Trump supporter and a vet do you have any proof that the one that hit him was from the ones that support Trump? What benefit would they have in hitting him, all they had to do was ask, and Brian even felt the same way all Trump supporters feel.

The mayor of Seattle stopped supporting Antifa and after loosing his apartment, taking flack, almost recalling him and yet still supporting Antifa while he was having dinner Antifa came up to him and harassed him and then hit him. @Robert: if there was a 'AntifaRioterNetwork' app that was going down, I would support to have its data preserved to hold responsable any individual who committed crimes.

> The guy was a Trump supporter and a vet do you have any proof that the one that murdered him was from the ones that support Trump?

To have proof, you got investigate. To be able to investigate, you got preserve data. It is pretty simple.

The above is kind of a non-sequitur...

Parler launched in 2018 as a freewheeling social-media site for
users fed up with the rules on Facebook and Twitter

ALL "apps like Parler" (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, all of it) exist so that they can farm people's
information to the highest (or maybe any) bidder... that's how they make money, and money is
the only reason they are in business...

It costs a FORTUNE to run an app like Parler. I don't know if they were running on VMs on EC2 or serverless or what but I imagine their costs were in the tens of thousands per month.

Someone had deep pockets to bankroll that. I wonder where all that money came from?

Actually Parler was a bit more noble all the other sites were made for the purpose to mine data, sell it, or use it for other purposes.

Good point.

My guess would be VCs (Venture Capitalists) since there is money to be made on right-wingers (see Fox News or OAN as an example).

That being said, I would say is probable Parler will have to show their books to the FBI pretty soon.

No.  Murdered people?  Really?  Where are these "facts" coming from?  The murder (single) was done by a policeman.
Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, 42.

You spoke in the plural.  You also seem to have blamed hundreds of thousands of people for what one person did.  My issue is not with the officer dying.  My issue is with the broad brush endogenously used.

Two is plural the last time I checked. You seem to be going out of your way denying what some Trump supporters did.

Well if they are so bent on shutting down conservative sites, why don't they shut down "silk road" and the "dark web"
They can shut down a site in hours yet they can't stop child porn.
That's how I see it.
