A Singular Day...

Alas, yesterday didn’t start off the way I’d wanted, though… Well, it actually did start out good enough, but soon things went downhill… then things wallowed around in the doldrums for a while teetering on the brink of despair, but everything surely finished with a flourish… Events sure can run a curious gambit with remarkable swings sometimes… right along with our emotions. Just like with so many other things in life…

Even the word ‘single’ itself is subject to a wide range of connotations, depending upon who is considering that term, and more importantly how they view their own preferences and desires… I’m single, for example, and I view that in a most positive way. I have more freedom and latitude in nearly every aspect than I’ve ever experienced in my entire life, and I relish my current circumstance! Most folks I know, however, consider that status to be little more than a temporary downturn in the broader scheme of things. Sometimes it can even be extremes of both…

For an addict, case in point, a single ‘fix’ can be too many, yet it can never be nearly enough. Still, whether ‘single’ is good or not is just about always a personal perspective based upon one’s own view of whatever is being pondered… Today was like that for this newbie cancer patient: And my emotions where all over the waterfront! I went from feeling confident I was probably going to ‘ace’ the treatment, then to those feelings completely reversing direction and flopping back to disappointment when it appeared all could be lost… A glimmer of hope later came into sight, and I chose to grab for the brass ring… Got it! Everything seemed to tick upward after that, too…

I performed all the usual preparation steps, then headed towards the car for the short ride to the clinic when the time came… I didn’t make it quite to the car, however, when a sudden ‘urge’ arose, and caused an immediate reversal of direction back towards the commode. I did, mercifully, manage to make it just in time for the subsequent ‘hydraulic’ event. Drats!!! At best the timeline just got screwed up, at worst the mission would wind-up being scrubbed for the day! Dang, the thrill of near victory to the agony of likely defeat in a matter of only a second or two…

It turned out to be the schedule that was readjusted; however, due to previously scheduled machine maintenance that afternoon, all appointments for the day had been compressed into the morning hours only greatly complicating any changes… and such a re-schedule didn’t appear at all promising. It was uncertain if they’d be able to work me in later, so the option of another missed day was clearly on the table. However, if I were willing to wait… and I was up for such a risk… a window just might open… They did squeeze me in an hour and a half later than my original appointment. That schedule ‘adjustment’ in itself forced some other adjustments on my part being made along with some additional discomfort being endured, and that’s putting it mildly… Still, they somehow managed to wedge me in, and the treatment went ahead after all.

I immediately noticed the movement of the machine was different than during any previous treatment, and the length of time ‘on the table’ seemed a wee bit shorter. I inquired about that, and sure enough, we had just passed a milestone and entered the next phase of treatment… No boo-boos or SNAFUs at all; everything was as it should be I was reassured… I was also to see the doctor this day, as I typically do one day each week… It was during that visit that I received a bit more info about the treatments…

After today, I only have nine more sessions in front of the beam to go! Holy mackerel! Single digits at long last! An absolutely joyous bit of singularly good news! Yep, twenty-nine down, nine to go… I was almost tempted to go celebrate last night! Didn’t happen, though… I’m instead going to double-down and try even harder to ride this torture out to the earliest possible conclusion with no further delays… However, I’ve already notified Sam, a local pal and perhaps my best friend, that the evening following my final afternoon treatment… I will be partying like I haven’t done in years!!! Hope he and the posse can join me, but come what may, this then ‘former radiation patient’ will be grinning broadly and slurring his ‘Ss’ noticeably!!! Who knows, he might even try to dance some…
