In case you didn't see it in another thread, Gavin's transplant surgery has been canceled twice.  He's had a bumpy road.  At one point, fluid overload resulted in extremely high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.  Another time they took off too much fluid during dialysis and his blood pressure bottomed out.  Anyway, his heart was left weakened and his cardiologist didn't think it was strong enough for the surgery.

Now the good news!  He had another ECHO on Friday and his ejection fraction (measurement of how well is heart is contracting) was high enough for the cardiologist to clear him for surgery.  Unfortunately, Haleigh (his sister that's donating) has her licensing exams (work thing) scheduled in Feb, so they aren't going to schedule the surgery until March.  Hopefully, he will remain free of complications until then.

The vaccine situation hasn't changed.  His mom has softened a little, but I have a feeling it's his dad that's the real roadblock.  His same-age cousin (another of Michael's grand-daughters) was diagnosed with COVID today, so maybe that will sway the decision in the right direction.  Especially since the blood type theory is not on his side (he's type A).  Haleigh is type A as well (duh, obviously); her symptoms after the vaccine were quite a bit worse than mine... which further supports the blood type theory.  Michael is also type A. Roll Eyes  A COVID infection would not end well for Gavin or Michael.

Thanks for the update.  Hopefully everyone will stay healthy through February and his transplant can proceed on schedule this time. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Hopefully he doesn't have it too rough from the vaccine's immunity building side effects.

Gavin is getting one of Haleigh's kidneys today!!  They just took Haleigh back for surgery and they'll be taking Gavin back shortly.

Please send your prayers, good vibes, or whatever else you do!!

Well, the surgery is done and the kidney is already putting out a lot of urine.

So far, so good.

What is the latest update?

Haleigh will be discharged from the hospital as soon as bowel function is established (*she takes a sh!t).

Gavin is complaining of some pain today, but the kidney is doing its job.  They usually keep the recipient in the hospital for a few days.  Unfortunately, he will have to take anti-rejection meds for the rest of his life.  But, given the alternative, not a bad trade-off.

Good to hear the progress...and yes, anti-rejection meds are a much better trade-off than the alternative. Had a family member go through a transplant and the effects of the drug really bothered him, mostly from his own appearance. He and his body eventually acclimated to it.

UPDATE: Day 2 post-surgery: Haleigh was discharged today. Gavin was moved from ICU. The kidney continues to work like a champ.  They won't be in a rush to discharge Gavin because of his previous health challenges.
Thank you all again for keeping them in your thoughts and prayers!  smitten

10 weeks post-transplant.  Gavin graduated from high school and walked with his class!  Psycho went to Texas for the event.
