seems my subscription to mcafee has run out. anything out there better, cheaper, easier?????????? a bud at work uses AVG..........i read the reviews and most of them were not favorable at all. not being an IT or computer person my knowledge of antivirus stuff is very limited to the name brands. looking for something cheap and good..........not sure if those 2 things mix in the computer realm but thought i'd ask. Happy New Year....may you all have many safe miles in 2010.

If you have comcast. Then you can get Mcafee "FREE" just go to the comcast.net home page and download. Comcast makes a big deal about giving it away free but really I think they give it away free to help keep stuff off their Network.

Bill Gates has one now, it's what I use, but don't try to download it if you don't have a "valid" copy of winders... http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/My seat of the pants feeling is that it makes stuff a little slow on startup, but after that I can't tell it is there... -Mike "it is free"

Been using AVG(free) and Spybot(free) or years on several computers, no problems, no virus, no spyware. Works for me. Thanks Pete.

Without a doubt NOD32 smart security has email protection, ad-ware protection, virus protection, file system protection, firewall, document protection and has one of the best real time protection stats on the market. It uses the smallest system resources of almost any program out there and updates many times daily automatically. One feature that I really like is if you dont turn off your computer but want it disconnected from the network just click a button on NOD32 and your off click and your on. The other feature it has is to protect from potentially harmful applications or unwanted applications and you can choose to turn this off or on. Has 32 and 64 bit OS protection and you can either install and forget or play with the settings. I also have had no problems getting through to customer service and they are always helpful. That in my book was a big plus not because I have had problems but I think it reflects the general careing of a company and what they put first "the customer" . AVG is good just not as good.

Another vote for Avast.
Over the last 6 months I have lost count of the friends and acquaintances who have complained about their computer slowing down whilst running AVG Free. I too used to run it and likewise noticed the same problem. All have switched to Avast, it has a much smaller footprint and no-one has reported a virus getting through. It updates more regularly and I haven't suffered from any nasties since I installed it. I ran AVG for several years and I suffered with it not keeping all the nasties out. One of the worst memory hogs out there is Macafee and it can be a real pain to get rid of every last bit of it when you uninstall it.
I would steer clear of an MS AV product as I am sure that the virus writers will start to target it specifically like they do Windows.

just got the AVG free..........thank you all. Hi, BG, we just got our computer back after it was infected. We have a contract, so an expert took care of us. We had AVG Free, but something got by. Our expert cleaned everything, put back AVG Free and added Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. These are what he has on his personal computer at his home. We're now covered by 2 free programs that seem to be doing the job well. We hope all is going well for you, friend.

www.free-av.com avira antivirus, voted best freware on the market for antivirus, been running it on my whole network for years. spybot also. but this is the best av on the market and it free plus it uses next to no system resources so, you never know it is even running. mcafee and norton are gimmicks to make you pay for nothing. both of them slow down your system. avg uses way too many resources also. I am a gamer so, I use what wont slow me down. avira is definitely the best I have used.

found it on sale at Target for $49. Takes less time to boot up and get going than Mcaffee did and it comes highly rated. I sometimes think antivirus companies are the problem all along.

I used free stuff for years with pretty good luck, but I still got unrepairably infected and lost a puter and five years of files. When I ordered my new puter, I bought this (cheaper from Tigerdirect than CA, and a rebate made it almost free), it is the best I know of.....though I am far from an expert in this field. I did not download on line, I got a thumb drive for installation. It works very well. When you think about how much you pay for your puter, and how much stuff you end up collecting, and how much aggravation infection causes, a few dollars for security is worth it. It is fast and it doesn't slow down my system at all. http://shop.ca.com/malware/internet_security_suite.aspx?ggus=42758262&gclid=CNPC3qnxgZ8CFQ975Qod3i4FTA

Virus protection is not something you want to get free, not to say that there isn't good programs just you need to make sure that with a front line defense you dont take chances.

This is beginning to sound a lot like OEM vs. aftermarket discussions over on the tech board. "They charge more, therefore it must be better." Avast seems to get good reviews. I'd never heard of CA until my father got it as a freebie with a new computer. Of course, the only thing free was the CD. To actually install the program, you had to pay, but they did their best to hide that fact. I resent that sort of marketing.
As for free vs. paid: In my opinion, Linux is a superior operating system to Windows. It's free. Windows is far from free (you pay for it in with the computer purchase, of course). Just because it's free doesn't mean it's junk. Might be junk, but might actually be a far superior product.

I think the key is that you can't use JUST ONE AV program. I use AVG Free, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my system and I've never ever had a problem.
That being said, the easiest way to ensure you never get hit is to buy a Mac. (or install Linux).

That'll keep you from getting a Winders virus, but Macs and Linux (and Unix in general) face remote security exposures all the time... here's one from this week for Linux: 09.1.3 CVE: Not Available Platform: Linux Title: Linux e1000 Driver "Jumbo Frame" Handling Remote Security Bypass Description: The Linux kernel is exposed to a security bypass issue affecting the e1000 network driver. Specifically, this issue is related to the handling of "Jumbo-frames" with an MTU exceeding 1500 bytes. The vulnerable driver fails to properly handle this case, which can result in the second frame being improperly handled as a new, independent frame. Ref: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.security.oss.general/2459All OSes require constant updates to stay safe... -Mike
