So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: February 10, 2021, 04:20:27 PM »

I was surprised to see this on Facebook Marketplace.

Obviously I don't get out enough but, I thought selling wild game was illegal.

Raccoon Meat for sale
$25  · In Stock
Listed in Purvis, MS
Details
Condition
New
Raccoon Meat for sale
$1.50 a lbs cleaned with feet left
$1.00 a lbs uncleaned
Killed to order
Can deliver

I'm not making any calls on eating raccoon, just didn't know you could sell the meat from what I think of as wild game.   Have raccoons been domesticated?

Don't know about selling it but when I was a youngster in Mo. my uncle would bake them with sweet potatoes.  Kinda stringy meat if I remember.  My one and only time eating racoon.  They leave the feet on to prove it's not a cat.

Well, that's interesting.   Cat is not something I've ever had.
At least, I don't think so.

I had some stewed 'possom one time. My mother had two sisters and 8 brothers. They lived in a true log cabin. One original main room with lean-tos that were added before my time for the kitchen and boy's bedroom. You had to go out on the porch to get from the main room to the boy's bedroom. The bedroom was the full length of the house full of beds and looked like a hospital ward.

The boys would catch a 'possom and put it up and feed it (usually shelled corn) for a period of time to "clean it out" before cooking it. I don't know how long they fed it.

What I remember about eating it was that it was tender and very greasy. I think it tasted pretty good. cooldude

Isn't venison wild game? Shocked

It ended up not working out, but back in the mid 90's a Vietnamese friend of mine was planning on taking a drive from the southern tip of Vietnam to the northern border with China, and he'd invited me to come along.

I mentioned I'd like to try dog, just once.

He laughed so hard he nearly fell over.... "You spend month in Vietnam? You eat dog. You not know when, but you eat dog!"

During my tour in S. Korea, I also wanted to try the cuisine of the region.   Tried Kygogi (dog).   Not sure of the spelling.  The truth is, the spices used in that region of the world don't sit well with me and it was impossible for me to tell what kind of meat it was.

Wondering "BBQ'd "Coon" would go over for the Mississippi Madness Meet, Greet and Eat?   What do you think?  Wink

Yep, I've tried quite a few different meals.   Some were quite good, some not so much.

Gator and frog legs, not so much.   Snake wasn't bad but, anything deep fried is good in my opinion (normally).   Can't handle real spicy foods though.   Monkey on a spit was different.

I had an Uncle that was really into Bow Hunting, he went to Alaska or Canada (don't remember which) and killed a Grizzly Bear.   Brought some back to home and we had Grizzly Roast.   I was not impressed but, as I've said before, it depends on how it was prepared.   Almost anything can be made appetizing (almost).

Squid and noodles in Hong Kong from a street vendor. The squid was fair tasting but downright CHEWY. Noodles were danged good too. Had some food in Japan I couldn't even pronounce then! While I enjoyed my food exploration while in The Navy thinkin here some of the dishes and spices I enjoyed then today I'd pay a "price" if ingested now!  Lips Sealed Also thinkin with a Good K C BBQ sauce racoon shouldn't be too bad and I'd consider takin a bite or three!  2funny Course had some interesting TexMex dishes in Texas. Long as what ever bein served don't kill the first one or two at the head of the line I'm good!  Roll Eyes NEVER EVER be first in line fer a new dish!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

This thread reminds of the time I ordered chicken (in a pizza restaurant) in Turkey.  To my knowledge, every single restaurant in Turkey sold chicken (20 different ways too).

Well I got the worst food poisoning (and sickness) I ever had from that chicken.  10 days of near death experience.  I was pretty sure that having no chicken on hand, they went out and scrapped one off the street, or found one that had died of old age.... some weeks earlier in the hot sun.

Forever after that experience, whenever I go to any specialty restaurant, I only order the specialty.

Our HS football team kicker was Chris Koon.  One team we played was largely black guys.

Our team was all hollering from the bench for Koon to kick the ball out of the end zone.

The ref ran over and told us if we didn't quit calling those guys coons, he'd throw an unsportsmanlike conduct on the whole team.

We were too poor to have our names on our jerseys.  We only called him Chris after that. (true story)

It's best to call raccoons raccoons.

They're actually okay.  They have to swim using their arms only and on land they are slow tending to drag their hind parts behind them.   Smiley

Just so you all know, the decision on where we are eating at the Mississippi Madness Meet, Greet and Eat has been decided.   I did ask about BBQ's Raccoon, it's not on the menu.

I didn't ask about frog legs but, they do have handicapped parking so, maybe so.

FYI, racoon is not chicken. Cat it only good heavily seasoned. Possum is greasier than bear. Frog legs are great if properly prepared. Dog is mushy, at least the only one I know I ate. Monkey was stringy.

Armadillo is wonderful if you are not the one cleaning the stinky little b@$tards. Venison can vary by region and the forest rats diet. Elk is my favorite red meat but they don't seem to offer that in the local butcher shop.

I must have eaten several goats in Jamaica (mon) before I realized I was eating goat. I still went back for more after that discovery.

I was always taught that if you killed it you ate it. I even tried a seagull once that swallowed a hook while trolling. I REALLY don't recommend that meal. I now make exceptions for the local coywolfs, feral cats, and the racoons that follow me into the barn expecting a hand-out.

I find it interesting to see what folks have eaten.   Lots that I probably would pass up.

While wild fire fighting in AZ in the late 60's early 70's, I ate rattle snake on several different occasion and  some of mountain lion (trapped and cook by the fire).   No special seasoning.  Just roasted over a fire.

Have killed several raccoons, no didn't eat them.  They were in a area with lots of rabies.

Have killed and eaten, antelope, mule deer, and elk.  More than my fair share.  Elk was the best eaten.   Though helped a neighbor pack out a moose.  Got several steaks, they were by far better than Elk.

I’ve eaten a lot of stuff. Never knew anyone who ate mountain lion. How was it ?

My list : balut, cat, monkey, muktuk, walrus tongue, reindeer, Dall Sheep, moose, caribou, black bear, ptarmigan, spruce hens, kangaroo, bowhead whale meat, Irish white, black “puddings”. (The cat & monkey could have been anything)

Meat, the Mountain Lion had a rather strong flavor.  Couldn't relate it to anything else I have eaten, but then I have lost my sense of smell when I was 18 or so.

Never been far enough north where I could eat critters up there.   Think I would like to try caribou.
