Human feet are about the most unattractive part of the body. (with few exceptions)

I had a buddy in college whose feet stank so bad, he was never allowed to take his shoes off... ever.  I mean he could clear a room.  Farts dissipate, but his feet never did.  

I think so many toes end up on top each other from lifetime footwear we wear.  No one has pointy feet, so why are there so many pointy shoes?  High heels make women walk attractively (especially walking away), but they have to be the worst orthopedic ever invented.

(Permanently) barefoot people may have even uglier feet, but they have none of the routine toe problems.

I have a lifetime of sore feet (on long use), but no bad deformations, but I wear wide rounded shoes, with great inserts in every piece of footwear.

The funniest named foot deformity is Hammertoes.    (well quit hammering on them)

I gather your occupation requires much of the day on your feet.  I hope you feel better soon.

I thought for many years that I had inherited my dad's shoe size (8EEE). But my wife kept noticing that I had bad problems with breaking toenails alot, so we kept going up in size. What finally worked was 9EEE. At least I don't have stinky feet

Home again.  Surgeon says it went well (don't they always say that?).  Local anesthesia hasn't worn off yet.  I hope to control pain with ibuprophen/Tylenol, but hydrocodone on stand-by, if needed.  I won't get a look a the foot until Thursday afternoon appointment.  

Oss, prayers for SAWB are a good idea... he'll be doing more "steppin' and fetchin' " than usual.

Last fall, October or November I had a Hallux Rigidus issue taken care of. Took the pain med, hydrocodone 7.5/300 every 6 hours because the pain was too much for the Tylenol or Naproxen to handle alone. Took the pain med for 7? days just to stay comfortable and in the recliner with the foot elevated and rested as doctor wanted. Recoup was 3 months. Walking only with a hard open shoe/sandel. I followed all doctor’s advise on when and how to begin flexing and moving toe and I can now walk and put pressure on my toe without severe pain. I still get some aches in it from time to time but flexing and moving it alleviates that. Maybe there’s some scar tissue I haven’t broken up yet.

Good luck, use the pain meds and do what the doc says as far as rehab. Hope you feel better soon and are up on your feet without issues in the future.

I know, I was thinking yesterday, what a dope I was for not taking before pictures.  I have x-rays though and a weird ass pic from when we went parasailing.  So, here's a short recap: Many years ago, I had a neuroma removed; the site became infected.  The doc was an idiot and treated with the wrong antibiotic for 4 days.  When I gave up on him and went to the ER, they started vancomycin for MRSA; I was in surgery the same day and again 5 days later.  After that, they wanted to amputate bc of bone infection... to which I said hell no.  Fast forward to wound vac, and I got another infection under the vac. Back to surgery and they removed the extensor tendon.  The wound finally closed after a year.  

Funny you should mention hammer toe, that's what developed to 4th toe bc of 3rd toe/metatarsal issues.  So here's a pictorial of what needed to be fixed.

1. (1st pic) Notice 3rd toe hanging down like some foreign appendage (bc of tendon removal and subsequent fractures).
2. (X-ray, white arrow) Notice all that excess, remodeled bone compared to others? Not good.
3. (X-ray, red arrow) Deterioration from infection and a healed incidental fracture.
4. (X-ray, green arrow) Another healed incidental fracture.
5. (X-ray, blue arrow) Hammertoe that developed due to trying to fill the 3 toe void.

Fixes:
3rd toe and metatarsal head: Excise excess bone; cut opposing flexor tendon; re-break the bones; realign everything and fuse/pin the bones and proximal toe (PIP) joint.
4th toe: Excise the excess bone and lenghthen the extensor tendon. 

That's it.  I haven't seen it yet.  I will get a look at it tomorrow afternoon.  I'll remember to take pics.

The red arrow looks worse because of the bone deterioration, but that's not actually causing the problems.  Also, the remodeled bone (white arrow) is making the red arrow spot look worse.  The missing tendon is the real initial culprit.  The blue arrow is the hammer toe, it's hard to make out there (a side view would be better).  If you look at the 1st pic, you can see the first (PIP) joint on the 4th toe is started to become more pronounced.  That pic was in June, it has worsened since.

It's not a tea party, that's for sure.  I have a pretty high pain tolerance though.  My strategy is to stay ahead of the pain curve, IOW take meds before it starts to hurt.  Well, last night I finally got some sleep (8 hrs 46 min, according to FitBit).  I woke up way behind the pain curve... Damn it!

Hope you're feeling better soon.  Cheryl had to have her ankle rebuilt a couple of years ago (I know, there goes the resale value).  It was definitely no fun.  It looks like they used deck screws to hold it together.  She said next get together, you guys can compare scars.

So, yeah, I got a chunk, but not nearly what I lost... not to mention long term issues with the ankle.

I never liked Adidas; too narrow for my Barney Rubble feet.  Hahaha!

As a back note; when I was taking Ozy after my MC accident for the back injury, the pain killer would help me pass out. But 2-3 hrs later I would wake up in pain, and spend the rest of the night sleeping upright on the couch.

One night after taking my Ozy, a knock on the door and family showing up kept me awake past the 15 min I would normally take to fall asleep after taking it, and 15 min later, the full pain was back. I learned from that, that taking pain killers for actually pain blocks it, with no "high" side affects. But taking too much drug when not needing it all, gives you a high instead. It is always better to keep ahead of the pain by taking moderate doses before you need a major one.

When the time comes I hope you can dance up a storm! I strongly suggest, however, that you pass on any invitations this not-so-skillful boot-scooter might extend... he'll understand...

I don't really feel a "high" from the hydrocodone.  I'm only taking it when I can't get to sleep.  I never take it during the day.
