What's the advantage of using IS carb springs in a standard/tourer? I bought them a while back and forget (still not installed yet).

Correct....slightly softer spring, wound a bit different. |

What Pete and John said...a little bit quicker throttle response in the mid-RPM range -- will not affect horsepower or anything like that. I installed them years ago and there really is not a big difference, but there is a difference. At the time, there where folks trying to claim more horsepower...as if the Interstate carb springs were some sort of magic elixir for the Standard and Tourer Valks.  It's an easy, quick switch out.

It's just that I read "I/S springs give more mileage" and also somewhere else, "I/S springs give more power." Better mileage and more power are like opposite effects. Thus the question arose. Thank you's.

I put them in my standard and I immediately noticed better slow speed control and a feel of being more connected to or more in command of the power is how I would describe it. There’s not any more power. You just feel it in your hand more.

I have both, 2001 models. Standard has cobra's and pretty sure it was rejetted for them, Interstate is completely stock. Interstate feels faster to me, but my buddy (Harley rider) says no way. We've kinda raced several times. I feel I have a HotRod standard (mostly the sound), and a JetPlane Interstate (mostly silent). They both run real good. They definetly have a different feel from one another.

I’m pretty sure just about every bike with Cobra’s is giving up some power, regardless of jetting. Some say 6 or more. Who knows, but I don’t want to give any up only to have a louder bike. If it were louder and gained 6, I’d have to think hard on that.  |

I never understood the excitement around IS springs. I put them on my Std many years ago and I never noticed any difference, whatsoever. YMMV.  |

If you aren’t used to paying close attention to subtle nuances with the throttle you probably won’t notice the difference. If you use the clutch throttle rear brake technique often for slow speed riding like in parking lots you will appreciate the slight but noticeable improvement in throttle response. |
