82-year-old Vietnam vet beats armed intruder to death: 'That guy picked the wrong house'

“ According to a report from Newsweek, 82-year-old Herbert Parrish and his wife, 79-year-old Lois Parrish, were inside their South Carolina home Sunday when they heard an unexpected knock on the door.”

“When Lois opened the door, she saw a man — later identified as 61-year-old Harold Runnels — who said he was looking for his dog.”

"I opened the door and he said he was looking for his little white chihuahua and wanted to know if I saw it," she recalled. "I told him no, I hadn't."

“At that point, Runnels reportedly forced his way into the home, brandished a knife, and slashed Lois' forehead.”

“ During the melee, Herbert grabbed a shotgun hanging on a nearby wall and repeatedly struck Runnels with the barrel of the weapon until he fell unconscious.”

Abdullah added, "[F]olks have the right to defend themselves if their lives are in danger, but the best thing to do is call for help. Every situation is going to be different. It may be a similar crime in nature, but every situation is going to be different. There's no way to accurately predict exactly what actions that any person should take if somebody is trying to invade their home. The best recourse is to think smartly and get help on the way."

An 82-year-old Vietnam veteran defended himself, his wife, and his property after an armed intruder entered his home over the weekend, killing the intruder by bludgeoning him to death.

At that point, Runnels reportedly forced his way into the home, brandished a knife, and slashed Lois' forehead.

During the melee, Herbert grabbed a shotgun hanging on a nearby wall and repeatedly struck Runnels with the barrel of the weapon until he fell unconscious.

Parrish — who said he pummeled Runnels at least 10 times in the face — said, "I felt, we're gone. He's going to kill us and take what he can take. He was not going to go out the door and leave us alive. That's the way I felt. That's why I said 'I've got to do something quick and get the edge on him. Get the advantage on him.'"

Parrish said that he hit Runnels "just as hard as I could hit him."

When authorities arrived on the scene, Runnels was unresponsive on the floor. He was taken to a nearby medical center where he died of his injuries, according to Fox News.

Parrish said that he hit Runnels "just as hard as I could hit him."

After he slashed my wife across the forehead with a knife, that's just how hard I'd hit him too.  But I would not say that.

When you are 82, and you prevail with brute force against a younger, stronger (maybe methed up) thug, you would think the authorities would not spend much time looking at you for a crime (of some sort).

But really folks, never forget that you are in great risk talking about it with the cops in the immediate aftermath of any violent encounter.

He broke in and tried to kill and rob us and we defended ourselves.  Beyond that, talk to my lawyer.

Do you have a lawyer?  No, do I need one?

I KNOW we aren't sposed to be happy when others die. And I M H O there are exceptions. This may be one of those exceptions. Course what passes for "news" may villify him and for sure many deez may too. There was a time when protecting you and yours and your "stuff" was perfectly legal and acceptable. Some would/will deny that precept. Well there Will be others attempting to take what Is Not Never Has Been their stuff. We all NEED to be aware of nefarious folks and their devious ways. RIDE SAFE.

Quotes from around the web:    cooldude

"the beatings will continue until moral improves"   I guess his moral didn't improve.

Beware of old men.  You don’t know what they have done and are capable of doing.

Can't blame grandpa, what with the price of ammo these days.

So is there an address that we can send a 6-pack to or something? (or a box of ammo for his shotgun?)

sheriff had to make that statement about going for help.   It is the politically correct thing to say.

Hopefully inside he was saying "way to go" old man.

We don't know if shotgun was able to be fired or not.  May have been a decoration.   I have one of those. somewhere around here.   2funny

The sheriff's dept Capt Abdullah claimed
"...but the best thing to do is call for help. Every situation is going to be different. It may be a similar crime in nature, but every situation is going to be different. There's no way to accurately predict exactly what actions that any person should take if somebody is trying to invade their home. The best recourse is to think smartly and get help on the way."

Interesting.  We've heard repeatedly from multiple other LEO spokesmen that you are responsible for your own security/safety.  Because they cannot get there quickly enough to help you.  Not to mention they are overwhelmed. "The police are only minutes away - when seconds count." They will get there in time to investigate, draw the chalk outlines & put up the crime tape, and supervise the body / blood removal.

Any knowledgable citizen knows he should be prepared to provide his own defense as no one else who isn't already there, can.  I wonder if this Capt Abdullah is really aware of the circumstances in his (potentially adopted) country.  Or is his foreign name inconsequential and he's just speaking with unrealistic political correctness.  Maybe he's a lefty who believes in Big Government and dependence thereon?

With an intruder breaking in. Take out yer cell phone and dial 911. Or pull yer pistol or pick up the pistol-however you get it in yer hands-and pull the trigger. We Military Types most likely WILL double or triple tap. You Actually are Not Required to do a cursed thing. Wanna be a victim? I'll call 911 after IF I'm able. Or the neighbors will. My Hat is off to him And I am Rendering a Parade Ground SALUTE to this MAN!  cooldude Course if he had a Louisville Slugger it might have worked a tad bit betta! But that be like speculation. RIDE SAFE.

If I doubletap some crackhead in my basement, first thing I'm doing is looking to see if he's alone (and no driver).  If so, I doubt I'd call 911 at all.  Why give them the opportunity to come over and track mud all over your house, take your gun(s), issue press releases to all his buddies and family members, and second guess your decisions at all (with possible referral to some liberal DA looking to get reelected)?

YMMV

That's one badass 82 yo mo-fo, it takes some real power to terminally crack a skull with a shotgun.

I instructed martial arts for many years. I had my own schools. I taught a class for advanced students called street fighting.  I learned this technique from instructors from Texas and several foreign countries.
A street fight last on the average ( of those caught on camera) lasts less than five seconds.
He did not have time to call 911.  He reacted to the situation.  When in a situation , you are not thinking reasonable.  You are on a survival mode.  Sometimes survival will take you beyond reasonable force.
Every mind is different. W H A T  is reasonable.  His wife was attacked with a knife. His response , in his mind was reasonable in this situation.
For those of you wanting to ask , yes , I have defended my life more than once.  Angry

Capt Abdullah is spot on correct. The guy should have called 911 before he broke in and got beat to death.
