She recently was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a near 7 hr. operation today for a double mastectomy. She & twin brother will be 42 in May, has been through a lot as a young girl after her father & little sister were killed in a car accident. Her twin brother suffered a major brain stem injury and at nearly age 42 has the mental maturity of a 14 year old. The granddaughter's name is Valerie, she and her big moose of a husband both ride their own bikes. He's about 6'3" and hits about 300lbs., doesn't know his own strength but has the softest heart of anyone I know. He cried like a newborn at Rita's funeral. Right now he(and I) are in turmoil over this, for me it brings back painful memories of my oldest daughter and her breast cancer which eventually took her eight years after her operation.

Valerie has two pre-teen boys, is a supervisor full time for the VA, been there for a number of years, husband is a trucker by trade but is now undergoing some training by the owner of where he works. He wants to retire soon and leave the running of the company in my "grandson-in-law's" capable hands. Obviously she has her hands full and it all is in Ed's(husband) hands for the foreseeable future. They are the only family I have that still live in Florida. We're close, often get a text with nothing but "I love you grandpa"....then tells me lately how I'm going to live to 100. Adding..."I can see it all now, gramps on his motorcycle doing 95 on I-95 at age 95." Guess we'll see what the next 12 yrs. bring.  Grin

Hoping for a good outcome John.

Cancer treatments improve every day. A fellow I work with is on a new drug and it's kicking the cancer's ass.

Prayers to our creator that Valerie has a positive outcome . My daughter had this procedure 8 yrs ago at 30. Praise the Lord no problems since. Medical science is making steady gains on this disease.

That gal is unbelievable. I was sitting here watching a movie when the phone rang...it was her. Voice weak as a kitten, kinda raspy, but said she just needed to talk to me for a little bit. Wanted to let me know how she's doing herself, I couldn't hold back the tears and she joined me on the phone. Nothing was said for a couple minutes, the unspoken word was enough at that moment. She was telling me how the pain meds were wearing off and wanted to call me before they gave her another dose. For a while she was having trouble breathing when sleeping so they upped the oxygen and did something else I didn't understand but her husband Ed told me they have it under control. You can probably tell...we're quite close. Her mother is my second oldest daughter & lives alone in central Illinois. I thank you all for your answers to my request, she's not out of the woods yet so I'll keep posting her progress as the days go by.

Prayers from Tennessee. My Momma was a breast cancer/mammography survivor and lived to be 89, so
I'm sure they've advanced treatment since then. Wish her all the best, and comfort for your families peace.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone. She's home, sent home early the second day following the surgery. Obviously still a lot of pain but her husband keeps her medicated ahead of time so as to stay ahead of the meds wearing off. She found that sleeping in her recliner kicked back only halfway allows her to sleep better...no breathing issues and less congestion. We talked yesterday, sounds much stronger now, gets up with some help and walks down the hall to the bathroom. Sitting down isn't a problem, getting off the pot...different story since she's not able to use her arms to help. It's a slow process but she's encouraged as am I.

Thanks again to one and all, this is a great bunch of folks.  cooldude

I bet she has at least one drain on each side......that was the hardest part for me....had to get my wife to help me shower every other day....I was lucky that I didn't need any pain pills during my recovery other than ibuprofen a few times...I spent most of 6 weeks in my recliner......and the ice packs they sent from the hospital is what I used a lot for keeping the swelling down...hope she recovers quickly...

Yes Stan, she has a couple drains on each side. Kinda giggled when she told me her big masculine hubby couldn't handle cleaning the drain but she's able to do it herself.  Wink

John,
Prayers for Peace and Healing for your granddaughter. Also lifting up you and your family.

Strong gal, she's able to get up/down from the recliner by herself. Able to wash and dress herself, takes a bit of time but able to do it on her own. Walks to/from the bathroom, kitchen, wherever she wants but doesn't feel comfy going outside just yet due to uneven ground, etc. Her big thing is she's now able to sleep in her own bed, mostly on her back but still better than upright in the recliner. I'll get a dr. report from her this Tuesday evening. So far...I'm much relieved. Her big goal hopefully this summer is go for a ride on her bike with old gramps, I told her of a couple BBQ spots an hour or so away and she's all in. Can't wait!  cooldude
