Haven’t posted much, I have two Valkyries. I’m due to have hip replacement next month. Just wondering if anyone in the the forum rides with a full hip replacement, and if they encounter any issues while riding? I hate the thought of having to sale the bikes!

To be fair - he is going to start riding a trike , but I don't think the hip replacement was why, or at least not the whole reason.

I don't post much either, but I had my hip replaced 6 years ago and I honestly forget that I had the procedure, it feels that good.
I rode my Standard almost 5,500 miles round trip to the Taos InZane with my new hip and my ride is definitely more comfortable than before.
I had the Anterior approach, which is the way to go and remember that ice is your friend post surgery cooldude

I had a hip replacement. Anterior method. Have the correct Dr. Six weeks later I was riding. Dr. nicked a nerve in my leg. At first , I had to watch my foot go down . I'm part that now. No real pain.
Have the Dr. describe how the incision will be done. Mine was done horizontally.  It should have been done vertically.  That is what caused my nerve damage .

Had a full left hip replaced the day after Christmas of 2018. Had the rest of the Winter to get ready to ride but would not have needed anywhere near that long. Never slowed me down a bit.

Yup, be 83 in a month. Had mine done November, 2016 via the anterior method w/vertical 4" incision....full replacement. Nice thing about the anterior method...they don't cut muscles or tendons so recovery is much faster, often sending the patient home the same day. Never used a walker or crutches, after about 4 days I only took the cane with me as a precaution when walking but seldom used. Back on the bike in about 2-2.5 weeks, no issues. Had some pain meds but only used 1/2 a tab a day the first couple days home. As for the trike, Barry's correct....has nothing to do with the hip. I've reached the point(age?) where I feel more secure on 3 wheels. I'm still more than strong enough to ride 2 wheels and lift the bike if dropped...heaven forbid. Before replacement, it got to the point I couldn't swing my leg over to get on the bike without intense pain. Now, no problem but I have noticed the older I get the higher that darn seat gets. And, if I should ever be fortunate enough to have another corider placed in my life, I want her to feel secure back there. I doubt I'd allow a corider on 2 wheels at this point.  Smiley

I know four people who had hip replacements including my father, all of them said the only regret they have is not doing it sooner.

You'll be a bionic man and better than before.  Grin cooldude

I had my left hip replaced  April 2017, Was riding in 6 weeks.
Had the right hip done June 2019, was riding in 5 weeks.
As stated, Anterior method, vertical cut is the way to go.
Riding now is pain free, sorry I waited so long to get them done.

And, VERY important, follow all PT instructions!!
In September 2019, I dropped my I/S in a remote, dirt parking lot. No help anywhere near.  I picked it up alone, took 2 tries. I figured I was going to pick it up, or blow out the right hip trying.

Been awhile since I posted too.   I've had both hips replaced and I get some cramping in the hips.    Messed up back gives me more trouble.   I bought a STX 1300 hoping for some relief but I prefer the Valkyrie.  You just can't beat it.

My 49 year old firefighter son had both hips replaced and is back to work and says he feels like 30 years old. He wished he hadn't waited so long to have it done!

Just had my right hip done December 4, last year, anterior method, vertical too... Smiley
Still doing some workout and physiatrics, and riding a moped, since I will get my license not before
April 1st. But I am looking forward to get on again... cooldude
PS: Still some wee pain and a numb spot on the thigh, but it's ebbing away slowly...

You’re on your way!
My PT came to my house, and we talked about my goals. I took her out to see my bike, and told her I “needed” to ride again...
She understood, and we worked on some extra exercises to get me back on.
Just saying what worked for me...

I'm ride with a hip replacement. Total left hip replaced in September of 2016 and I've ridden cross country, Chicago to Phoenix and everywhere in between.
A big key is the physical therapy  afterwards and self-maintenance going forward. Take care of your hip like you'd take care of your valk and you'll be riding for a long time.
Good luck.
