Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Anti-Freeze…

Now, if I were a techie-type, which clearly I’m not, and if I were writing/reporting something about that subject with a more local slant, as it might pertain to riding in Florida for instance, then I would likely refer to that mystical fluid as coolant… however, I’m not attempting any of that… Nope, in fact, this whole piece is only indirectly ride or even tech related. Oh to be sure there is a serious legacy linkage to riding and especially to our girl for sure, but… OK, I reckon I’d better explain…

It started while I was seated comfortably in that recliner of mine last evening suspended in that familiar limbo-state somewhere between nodding off into a nap and actually comprehending what I was watching on an old re-run TV program, when… I heard the ‘announcement’ of a just received text message. Well, text messaging being only barely but still just within the range of my technical ability, I decided to go ahead and read it, as my curiosity had by then been aroused… That message was quite brief stating simply, “The garage is busy this evening…” A special place, that garage… Our girl has even been on the lift there several times herself. That text also included two photos, though, and those spoke volumes!

Anti-freeze…

The legendary t-man403… Terry Nickel (pic taken by Kirby)
does la croix hydrate

Those photos had been taken by Kirby, a really good local friend of Terry’s, and… someone with whom I’ve also come to regard as a good friend, along with several others up there. They live in Calgary, AB, so naturally such a photo taken up there in late February would lead any softy southerner to assume that fluid must be related to a particular variety of ‘anti-freeze’ sometimes referred to as ‘fire-water’ in some fashion. It definitely was…

They proudly announced one of those ‘Chinook’ winds had swooped down upon them, and they were experiencing a slightly above ‘0c’ temp respite for the first time in a while… Naturally I inferred that then meant it must be time to take advantage of such a reprieve and deal with any latent ‘anti-freeze’ deficiency issues in preparation for again plunging temps soon to follow… They were… Just imagine…

Now ordinarily at any ‘garage wrench party’ I would feel about like a shoe salesman would if attending a conference of brain surgeons. However, in the case of ‘anti-freeze’ of that special sort, I do have a very vague familiarity, so… The effort was not totally wasted… In fact, it was plum wonderful to be even included! A marvelous interlude from another episode of ‘Perry Mason’, indeed!

Well, tech-talk being what it is, the discussion soon wandered onto other topics… and I started to feel that all too familiar ache of ‘disconnect’ arising deep within me… As an antidote to the rather expensive costs of texting on some ‘plans’, particularly on ‘international’ network connections, ‘WhatsApp’ was mentioned. Naturally that word had been heard by yours truly in some unfamiliar context or other, but like with so many modern marvels, I had no clue at all what it might be about or how on earth it might be of any use to normal human beings… (You need to be seated if you plan to continue reading…)

No, I still don’t completely understand exactly what it is or how it might be routinely utilized; however, I am, nonetheless, now a member, and I have successfully engaged through actual participation in its employment! Yep, Terry talked/texted me through the sign-up and connect processes, and somehow it all worked… for that session… I don’t know just now if I’ll ever be able to repeat that significant achievement…

This could, of course, very easily turn out to be another ‘Facebook’ disappointment, I’m afraid… See, SmokinJoe, after considerable effort and time, managed to get me hooked-up on that social platform once upon a time… Well, within three days I couldn’t recollect half of what all Joe had told me, and I certainly couldn’t figure it out for myself. I’d become extremely frustrated with all of that to the point I finally gave up and ‘unfriended’ myself… We’ll just have to wait and see how this foray into techno wizardry might play out… I am hopeful, but I’m not very optimistic…

One thing led to another, and soon enough we were having a ‘regular’ voice phone conversation! Kirby had gone home by then, but Terry’s boss, Lynda, had joined the conversation… (I forgot to ask her about her reaction to that article on marriage enhancement Terry had been reading and posting about recently…) Anyway, that was a really special event! Significant for sure in that I was engaged in some new-to-me magical tech enterprise, but that was only a very small part of the overall event surprise!!!

Many of you who’ve been around awhile may know about the time Terry rescued our girl and returned her to her heartbroken partner at the ‘14 InZane in Asheville, NC. Well, that entire adventure which has lasted long beyond the months associated with the actual beginning and her eventual return… a long story indeed, and far too long to be included here… What is important, though, is the friendships that grew from that at the very start extreme disappointment into such meaningful, life-altering relationships! It’s happened before with this slice of our lives…

Yep, hardly a day goes by without my reading a post on our board regarding the quality relationships of others formed entirely through activities and interactions within and unique to this organization. All of us have experienced this, and we all consider having found our way here to be one of the most amazing blessings in our entire lives. That ‘busy garage night’ in Calgary is but a tiny sliver of all that went into making that evening one of the best and most special contacts enjoyed by this humble non-techie in recent memory!!! ‘Wrench’ parties can be fun after all, it appears… even for us non-techies!

I've done the FB and MeWe thing, not impressed.  I like it here.   Cheesy   My only request of you Bruce is, don't start tweeting.   I like reading your words of wisdom and of your experiences.   I haven't, don't, won't and will not tweet.   Please don't go there cause I'd never get to read your stuff.

Hahaha!  At 280 characters per tweet, that post would have been more than 20 separate tweets.  I'm thinking twitter is not Bruce's optimal medium.

Cool, sounds like fun Bruce...enjoy the company without having to brave the Calgary Winter cooldude Even us old(er) folks contented with more traditional ways of keeping in touch can benefit from the communicaiton technologies available to us today. I've always considered myself to be reasonably "tradional" in this respect, but over the course of this past year in particular, 3 cases in point for me really highlight what keeping an open mind and embracing these newer communication  technologies can mean...

After 3 and a half decades of travelling every corner of this continent meeting and maintaining relationshis with peers and clients, my last trip was end of February last year as the Covid thing started to take hold. A quick tutorial first using, then hosting Zoom video meetings has led to a whole new world...still meeting and maintaining relationships with peers and clients "in person" and even doing site visits and putting on seminars as my career starts to wind down, with similar successes but without the endless drudgery of airports and flights, hotels and rental cars, restaurants, etc. and of course, my poor Mrs missing me so terribly when I'm gone  Wink Wink

Without Zoom, Facetime, and Messenger video services, my now 15 month old grandaughter up North wouldn't know who I am....especially with the various travel restrictions that have been in place over the past year curtailing our 12 hour treks up there. We visit with her on these platforms 3-4 times a week, and she knows who we are and looks forward to "visits" from Grandpa and Grandma. It's also nice to get to see my daughters all the time even though they live in other parts of the Province.

With our Valhalla meetup canceled last year for the first time since its inception 12 or 13 years ago due to the border closure, I hosted a very fun virtual get together with the gang over Zoom late in the year. Over 2 hours long and a lot of laughs and a few drinks were shared by most of our regular group from BC, WA, ID and SK, sharing photos and videos of rides, camping/hunting/fishing trips, bike & car projects, etc that we'd taken or been working on since we last met. Sure it wasn't the same as a full on ride in meetup, but it sure beat the he** out of not getting together at all.

So, technology is not all bad...Old "dogs" learning new tricks can be done...and it can be a good thing. cooldude

What happens in "The Garage" is supposed to stay there!  Wink

Well Bruce, you passed the techie stuff with flying colours and there is some more fun stuff with that app that can come in handy like you can do a face to face call. That little video icon beside the phone one does that for you. It's like Face Time that IPhone users have, only it works on both Iphone and Android. Kinda cool!

Lynda and I enjoyed our chat and we will do it again sometime whether it be text, call or video.

Ron,

Not to worry, my friend! I've been less than aggressive in embracing new technologies throughout most of my life... Heck, I was only lukewarm about electric car windows at first... Nope, once I get 'someplace' and endure the long for me familiarization process, I like to linger as long as I can before tackling the next big challenge. Also, like you I've found a comfortable to me place right here, so... I just may post on here again one of these days...

Connie,

Thanks for the heads-up on Twitter! I've never visited that site, so I had no idea there was any volume restriction like that!!! You are so right about that medium NOT being optimal for this rather verbose writer... Heck, I can't even manage to say "Good morning" to folks in under two paragraphs! I hope your recent 'knife' experience is following a desired path...

DDT

MSB... Mike,

Your experience does not surprise me at all! Human enough to consider change and implications, but wise enough to not jump too easily or quickly at just any ol' new fad thing, and plenty smart enough to recognize early-on advantages to certain 'new stuff' and take full advantage of it. No mystery to this envious pal of yours that you have carved out a rather comfortable and good life for yourself!

I've had a somewhat different experience! I suppose part of that comes simply from my own desire (to a fault?) to focus on substance of life issues, and to not become distracted by chasing the tools of life or by keeping up with the latest thing. It appears to me you've struck a very good balance... I'm still pondering why my pace seems a bit too slow...

Terry,

What a wonderful thing it was to hear from y'all... It came at a very good time for this up and down guy, too. Lately I've been struggling with good days and not-so-good days, and I've found it extremely difficult to remain patient and take it easy while wanting to get back out there right now! Full recovery cannot be rushed, I've been told, and I will have to let things run their course... Drats!

You, Lynda, and Kirby, along with several others, have a special place in my 'Hall of Fame' vault of recollections, and I do think of y'all fairly often... Hearing from you now and then is a huge bonus! I'm going to Bama probably Monday for another doctor follow-up, and I'll have to take the cage... again. I'd rescheduled that appointment for a week later than originally set, entirely in hopes of being able to ride our girl... Just ain't in the cards, alas...

So, with a physical return to happiness unavailable for now, I'm down to mental journeys in pursuit of joy... and that's where y'all have come in... Thanks again for thinking of me, and especially thanks for the 'trip' the other night!!!  cheers

DDT

SmokinJoe... Joe,

I'm sad about the boo-boo FB turned out to be for both of us... I did and do appreciate your noble effort to bring me into the 21st century, but as you may have already suspected, advancement for this arcane relic from a bygone era is a most difficult challenge! Oh well, you certainly did more than your share! I'm looking forward to hanging with you again... Not sure how long that may take, but it won't be anytime in the immediate future... hopefully, though, by the Mississippi Madness thing, at least... I'm still keeping late November open on my calendar, too... just in case...

Bruce,
Only you could put together a post titled “anti-freeze” and so smoothly roll new technology into it!

It made me think about my first personal computer.  It was 1997 when I was rolled out of the hospital after my first cardiac plumbing repair with the admonition to not return to work for a few days.  I had a specific computer in mind already and my wife and I drove from north to south across West Virginia just to purchase the latest and greatest new computer on the market.  It had the capability to make video calls.  I thought that was great!  I never used that feature though.  The other person on such a call had to have a computer with the same capability in order to achieve such a call..........I did not know anybody else that had such computer.  The idea never caught on.  That feature quickly disappeared from computer options.

While I was a single man looking for some female interaction, a female pushed me to join Facebook.  I did so rather reluctantly.  I still don’t understand why anyone would want to broadcast any part of their personal life to the whole world in hopes that some friends and family would see.  I can type a letter and attach photos and text or email them to everyone I want to see those things just as easily as I can post them on some social media.  Actually, I am now moving back toward that kind of action.

I wonder if you are trying to convey that the social interactions of these VRCC folks are more like personal family than folks on some other “social” venues and in that respect, a kind of “anti-freeze” against feeling alone and in many cases, being alone.  I believe that is true!  I don’t believe that anyone in this group would abuse it, but it seems that no matter where you are on the American continent, you are never too far for for someone in this group to reach out with help if you need it.

Jerry,

As is so often the case, you are right... I do reach out often while traveling, and it has never failed that I can find contact and communication... and on here, that is always with kindred spirits, too. That last clause in your reply about finding help whenever needed has been tested widely and proven absolutely accurate!!! I'm just proud to be here...

*blinks*

Has it really been that long? '14? My math skills are notoriously deficient before coffee but I come up with 7 years?

For some reason this morning I find that utterly terrifying...

Ah...and there's the coffee. I'd add some anti-freeze but it's not even daybreak yet.

*raises cup*

Well, here's to the next seven! Ride on Bruce!

Daniel,

As is typically the case, much wisdom contained within your insightful observations! Thanks! One thing, though, as our illustrious cohort Skinhead has observed, "You can't drink all day if you don't start first thing..." Anyway, I raise my coffee cup back at you... Sure hope it ain't seven more years before our paths cross again...

Joe,

I'm booked as well... Don't know at present from which direction I might be coming though... heck, I don't even know what day I might be arriving either! By that Friday, for sure; however, a bad weather forecast might incline me to arrive earlier... Have I ever mentioned that I don't care for riding on wet/slick surfaces? Rain or shine I'll be mighty glad to see the two of you, along with near a regiment of others, and I'm willing to speculate there just could be copious quantities of adult beverages consumed during our reunion! I'm still undecided on trying any BBQ'd coon... you ?
