Took time out to watch "Inglorious Basterds" yesterday...which was a pretty good movie if you can allow yourself to dismiss the actual historical facts of the allied campaign during WWII. Anyway the part of the movie that really got my interest was the Brad Pitt character, a Tennessee "good 'ol boy" that took great pride and satisfaction in his job of eliminating Nazi's (eliminating them with extreme prejudice). This fictional character was no doubt patterned after a real life Tennessee WWI hero named Sergeant Alvin C. York, anyone who is not familiar with Sergeant York's biography will find it good reading. The Alvin York state park is about 100 miles northeast of Nashville, TN and would make for a good Valkyrie meet. Pick a date Jim and let's get a ride in the area. I love the roads and Big South Fork is one of our local group's favorite ride. Jamestown has several motels all we need is a time and date. I look forward to the follow up on this up-coming ride  |

I went thru that area once of his home where he grew up with the semi hauling frozen goods. Nice area to ride a bike in! It was fun too with a 53" trailer!
I like secondary roads if I have the time.

There is a old movie about the life of Sergeant York . Played by Gary Cooper . It is a pretty good movie.

Willow your assessment of Alvin York is the same as mine, he definitely was a reluctant warrior...but as it turns out a very capable and lethal one after coming under attack. When I say that I felt the Brad Pitt character was patterned after Sergeant York, it was more from the standpoint that both characters where from the same geographical region of the country, speaking with the same accent and of course both where courageous when confronted by the enemy. I agree that the character in Inglorious Basterds was not a reluctant warrior as was Sergeant York. Even though I have not yet seen the Gary Cooper movie, I am assuming that they probably took some creative liberties when telling the Alvin York story to make the movie more successful at the box office. As far as Brad Pitt is concerned, I am not a very big fan. As a matter of fact this is only the second movie with him in it that I ever liked....the other one was "A river runs through it" which was an excellent movie. |

I have watched the movie twice, must admit it is a great movie even tho I don't normally like Brad Pitt. It is a fictitious tale but never the less very interesting plot. It is a must see.....( my 2 cents worth..)

I was thinking of loaning my copy to Dad, but not sure if I want to expose someone of such advanced age to the works of Tarantino. If you dad is anything like me....the only part of the movie that will cause his heart to skip a beat is that SUPER QUICK scene of Joseph Goebbels "working" with his assistant Francesca Mondino! |

Saw the movie thought it was great. Not PC at all which made it all that more enjoyable. (I get real irritated with all that stuff)
As stated in another post not historically correct, at least the way Hitler died unless this guy was supposed to be one of his many doubles he had.
Really liked Brad Pitts character whether he was potraying a real person or not, I think we need someone like that now, like maybe in the Whitehouse!!

It was a good movie-- not as good as Pulp Fiction in my mind, but definitely good. A little slow start, but the ending is incredible.

I might take Chris up on it but, honestly, the only movie IMO that Brad Pitt stared in that I liked was "A River Runs Through it"
Personally I'll stick with Gary Cooper's Alvin York.
