The little plastic ring through which the mounting screw attaches the cable end to the speedo drive at the axle is broken on my cable.  I'm thinking this is pretty common on this bike.  Is there an aftermarket part, a work around or do I just bite the bullet and buy a new cable.  I can't believe Honda made that part out of plastic.

I've never heard of them breaking.

New ones are $24 at partzilla.

Some used ones on ebay are $12.

On both of my bikes they were split at the bottom. A little blue Loctite on the screw and tighten until the split starts to open. That worked for me.

I lost the screw from mine over 100,000 miles ago. I've used zip ties since.

Today I cleaned up the rear wheel just to see how that might work.  I started with a wire wheel on a drill and then tried 150 sand paper which worked better.  There's no way I'm going to do the work necessary to get all the pitting out to buff so I'm probably going to paint the wheels . . . some day.  I only did the rear, below is the after, there are some before pictures earlier in the thread.  I'm pleased with the way they came out with so little effort.

While I was messing with the wheel I noticed a problem, cracks in the rotor.  Pics below.  I'm assuming the rear brake had been dragging for a while and caused the cracks.

You're not suppose to tighten the plastic ring down too tight, probably ⅛-turn, ¼-turn, after snug. If a fissure develops on the ring, it still possible to get the bolt tight enough in the expanding counter sink. It ain't going anywhere. I use medium locktite. I've rode with half the darn ring broken off and the bolt held the cable to the speedo box. It's a problem on Honda shadows as well. Seems that after you break a few, you stop breaking them. Also, a missing o-ring (28) might contribute to overtightening.

Thanks for the reply.  I don't remember if there was an o-ring or not, I'll have to look.  I'm assuming it was broken before I took it off so I'll just go with it and see what happens.

My duplicate posts explain were the posts were going that I thought were being added to my other thread.  Not sure how I managed to do that.

If you have enough of the "ring" left, you could take a washer that large enough to cover the top of the ring area and use a longer bolt SS bolt, lock washer, and described washer to hold it but use caution on tightening as you would with non broken one. a dab of silicone sealant on the threads is an option to Loctite in this particular situation. Mine was broke from its 1st. tire change years ago judging by mileage on the abused Metzlers that came on it. Its stayed in place with minimal pressure w/o repair/replacement so far.

Thanks, now that I've learned that this is an undocumented feature of all Valkyries I know I have to just deal with it.  cooldude

Undocumented feature is right...but it is documented now!

Mine split a couple of years ago and I immediately ordered a new cable assembly.  I only recently replaced the darn thing (I probably could have let the broken assembly ride a couple more years, but...well...ya know...) because I had the dash board apart.
