On my recent trek across West Virginia, I was very close to that section of road but I stayed on I-64! Fortunately for my trip I didn’t have to get on any gravel roads but there were a few sections where I ran out of four lanes and got to see plenty of drop offs, switch backs, and meeting yourself in curves. Great on a motorcycle, not so much in a truck pulling a trailer.
The most surprising thing I saw that I really wasn’t expecting to see were a hundred or more wind turbines lined up across the top of the mountains. One in particular appears just as the road reaches the crest of the mountain and the turbine blades seem to be coming directly for you.
One other thing I noticed was that there was still abundant snow in the upper elevations on the northern slopes.
