Maggie Valley, NC

« on: March 24, 2021, 06:07:49 AM »

28 years in Georgia.

Now for the rest of my life.

Last bike is a blue 2014 Valkyrie. Most of you will have seen a photo but if you haven't.

Last woman is a 1960 Amazonian redhead and stands eye to eye. Sandra served 4 years in the United States Army. After service she eventually ended up at Martin Marietta and was part of the team that developed the first guidance system for cruise missiles.

I will miss Rabun County and am happy to have lived there for nearly 3 years.

The move was generally painless apart from a whirlwind of liquor store boxes, packing, tape and bubble wrap. I posted on a local Facebook page for help and David answered that he and 2 friends would be happy to help. The promise of $25 and hour with a 3 hour minimum proved a good carrot. I eventually ended up using them at the Maggie Valley end as well paying them $10 an hour travel time to and from Clayton. Using a Budget truck and the 3 guys I moved for a total cost of about $820 compared to the $1,200 I was quoted by a local mover for 2 guys and they would have gone over the quoted hours.

The loading was easy out of a large ranch and took 2 hours. At the unloading end not so easy. Everything had to be carried down a short flight of rock/concrete steps. Across a bouncy wood footbridge and then either into the few basement rooms or up more steps into the main body of Sandra's home.

The guys also moved some furniture that was already in the home. Not one grumble from the guys. It really pleases me when I meet people who are able and willing to jump straight into a task without hesitation. More so when they listen to what is needed and can counter with viable alternatives.

So here I am with the unpacking and shoehorning my stuff into what is an already established home. Most of my hard goods got sold.

My black Valkyrie to a resident of Clayton who had a big Cheshire cat grin on his face as he rode away.

Maggie Valley as a resident. Hasn't quite sunk in yet that as I drive or ride down the main street that this is where I will be living for the foreseeable future.

If someone had told me when I was 20 that I would end up living in America I would have thought that a credible statement. If someone had told me when I was 20 that I would end up living nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in a small town in western North Carolina I might have thought them crazy.

Now I have some new roads to explore. Even though I've ridden in the area a lot over the years the smaller back roads wait for me.

Life is a Journey (Thanks Daniel) and life is what happens to us while we are making other plans .  cooldude

Congratulations on a smooth move and it looks like a move up in personal terms!

Look forward to seeing your reports as you explore your new area more in depth.....

Paul,

Congrats, old friend!!! Maggie Valley! One of my favorite places! I'm happy for ya... Your life has certainly had some curious twists and turns, many of them completely unexpected, but you've always managed to land on your feet. Like others, I'm also looking forward to many more ride reports, and... Does your latest partner ride? Good luck with all that follows... Good things often happen to good people, so good on ya, dude!

Sounds like a fantastic move; both the destination and the move itself. Leaving "home" is full of unknowns. I currently have a thread going about the planning stages for a distance move, which has no set date as of right now.

Best of luck in the new adventure! Now you have time to really explore.

Sandra doesn't ride and has no desire to. She is however a 4 wheel explorer in her 2 door slightly lifted Jeep.

Don't know enough about Harleys and really have no desire to plus there's no A/C in there and it gets WARM.

Hope so.   We could use a little mischievous behavior.   cooldude

Sandra will not be coming. She and I will not be living in each others pockets. One of the many facets of her personality I like.

Congrats on the move and what a location with the waterfall etc.  Maggie Valley has always been one of my favorite places.  No fast food joints etc. cluttering up the place.  You have to go to Waynesville for that.

Yep. Used to be 2 separate houses then an enclosed breezeway was built to connect the 2 and make it into one larger house.

It's only 1 room wide with a long corridor from the living room to the bedrooms and stairs to the lower level.

Well poop.

Splish splash.

Water heater in the lower level blew.

Servicemaster has their equipment sucking moisture out of the 2 affected rooms.

One wood floor already removed.

After 24 hours moisture reading of floors down from 100% to 50%.

No hot water so we slept and showered at another house that Sandra has as a vacation rental.
