I have a problem. I am putting carburetors back on 97 tourer. I rebuild them over the winter. The top cable is about 1/2 in to short. The bottom cable works fine. Look at pics I took. Check to see if the he cable was bound up - didn’t fine anything.  Any assistance is appreciated.

if its coming up a 1/2 inch short. its either not routed properly or you have the one thats hooked up adjusted to tight. i cannot remember but the last time i installed a set of carbs there was a situation that if i hooked up one cable the other was short. so i unhooked the one i had hooked up and inserted the one that i thought was short. it went right on . then i hooked up the one that i had to unhook and it went right on. didn't make sense to me but thats how i had to do it.

3W - you are correct I did the adjustments you mention and I have them on - got the cable on but it won’t return- when I pull the cable out of the holder it returns freely.  Any easy solution here?

About 90% —- but they could be wrong—- but I mark the top one before I dismantle it.

Ron, I just had this exact same problem where they wouldn't return.  Check these things first:

1.  cables slide free and clear when not attached to either side, requires disassembly of the handlebar clam shell, but that's pretty easy.
2.  Even if the cables slide free and clear, lube anyway
3.  throttle plates snap back carb side without the cables hooked up.  if not:
a.  with the carb installed, loosen up the cross bolts that hold the carbs together.  don't disassemble, just take the pressure off the nut.  tighten again in an alternating fashion so you get balance.  check for throttle plate snap again.
b.  if still no throttle plate snap, get some very light weight oil like 3 in 1 and lubricate the throttle plates inside and outside of the carburetor body.  work that oil in real good
4.  If all that's good, make sure the clam shell interior is clean.  Also, remove the throttle grip and clean/lube the surface of the handle bar.  Shove a rag down into the plastic throttle thing and get that real clean to.  Relube with silicone.
5.  At the clamshell, give the plastic piece that holds the cables a bit of silicone too.

Make sure you're not twisting the cables when you reassemble.  If it still doesn't work, then it's time for new cables.  You might have broken a strand inside the sleeve and it's causing a drag you can't see.

YUUUP!!!   Route those cables EXACTLY as they were before......or they won't work.
I think there was another thread on this?  Maybe Rusty?

Guys I appreciate your input. I feel like an idiot. I had the adjustment nut on the top cable in the wrong place. When I put the adjustment nut the right place it took less than 5 minutes to get the cables adjusted. It works fine now. Thanks everyone.

glad you found the issue. i never gave the adjustment nuts a thought. i wouldn't have thought you could have those in the wrong place. other than adjusted to tight.
