Just got done with my wifes and mine, both kids, and my moms.  Never liked taking the one semester in college in 1989 of income tax and now even more so.  Both kids get most of their federal and state back, but next year after my daughter gets married and her own house and files her own taxes with her own full time job,  we no longer get her college tax break providing over 1/2 her support.  Will be worse once other younger kid graduates college in another 2 years.  We will have to change our federal and state withholdings to take a TON more out of our paychecks  to not come up with 3-4K per year taxes due vs. pretty much breaking even now.  Was making a killing when both kids were under age 17 at home offering more child tax credits...

My mom never made enough in social security or dad's small pension to pay or get anything back ever.  However, this year her younger sister died and bumped her income up enough getting 12K in payout funds from a beneficiary my aunt had with a fund she had setup me not knowing it.  I doubt even my Aunt who passed knew she put my mom down as beneficiary to be honest way back when, who knows?  So, she has to pay in a few hundred bucks 1st time ever to state of WI.

I have not submitted them yet for I have to figure out online no longer send out 1099G forms with state of WI unemployment office for my 4 weeks of payout on furlough thanks to COVID when employer laid off everyone for 4 weeks unpaid getting unemployment money instead as income.

LUCKY for us the filing extension is well into May to get them filed electronically or mailed in.    Am glad I listened to the wife about 4-5 years ago to use TURBOTAX for all the college BS we had to enter is done thru turbotax much easier than PAPER forms I used all these years prior.

While not the only reason, income taxes were a real motivation to move to MS where I currently live.   Retirement income is not taxed by MS.  The feds still get their share.

Before folks start chiming in about how their states tax, I'll say this, MS cost of living is lower, property taxes are low, fuel taxes are lower and sales tax isn't nearly as high as some states.   Got a nice home for less $$ per square foot than other places we considered.   Yeah, financially, MS was a good decision.   So far, it's working out well.

I'd retire today if I didn't have to file another tax return.  I hate it more than a root canal. Angry

Prince Harry said something close to that.  Wink
When you're blessed with the brains to make more, I don't blame you for not wanting to donate it to the government.  But, better you than me.  Wink

I hate doing my taxes (almost as much as paying them), and always put it off to the last minute.

But saying they're worse than a root canal is a stretch.

Perhaps I should refer you to my dentist.    Smiley

My dentist offers an assistant that does soothing hand massage while he does his deed.   So, that helps.  Wink

I don't think I could truly appreciate a hand job while getting a root canal.

But I could try it.   Grin

taxes to root canal to hand job.   This thread is going awry in a very odd way... coolsmiley

My old password I thought was correct getting into WI unemployment office does not work any longer and I did not setup then in April 2020 my correct email or cell phone number to send me a NEW password update.  So, will have to ATTEMPT to call up WI unemployment office and get thru to a LIVE person in 30 minutes or more on hold am sure them being backlogged.

Just lucky the filing extension in WI has been moved to May NOT in 4 days due from now to file.

My kids have been bugging the heck out of us past 2 months to get them done since both not make much part time jobs getting both about 900 bucks total back state and federal.
