Knew the Star Spangled Banner was a poem with several verses, never heard them sung before except the first one.
Like this one alot. He sings it well too.
Brings to mind a couple of other songs I've learned about.
Taps. There are lyrics to Taps. There are different versions of those lyrics. The Boy Scouts have theirs, the Marine Corps has theirs too. There are others as well.
I was the emcee for a Wreaths Across America program at the Iowa Veterans Home years ago. At my first one we had an echo Taps played by a couple guys with trumpets.
During that a WWII Coast Guard Vet, Dale Shankster, who was the wreath presenter for the Coast Guard, began belting out the lyrics to Taps. That was not scripted. It was a show stopper right there. Tears all around.
I explained to the crowd what they just heard as few knew there are lyrics to Taps.
After the program many came to him to thank him and he told us how when he returned home from his service he joined a Legion post in his town. No one could play a trumpet or bugle so they would sing Taps at the funerals they attended as Honor Guards.
One of my favorite stories.
The other song I like is America the Beautiful as sung by Ray Charles. He starts with the 3rd verse:
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
