So Far, So Good…
Yep, the weather guys were doing their best to discourage me, and they were being fairly successful, too! We’d made it home from Hattiesburg ahead of a doozy of a rain event, which finally caught up with us after our arrival home. Good news right there, but… More was on the way, according to those negative Nellies, and my doctors’ visits scheduled for the next week appeared to be requiring another cage trip to Montgomery… Sigh…
Patience and not giving up, however, paid off. As predictably happens, forecasts always change as the timeframes shorten, and so it was with the timing and circumstances of our next soaking. Lovely weather at home, as I waited for departure time to draw nearer, but the predictions were not encouraging! And, from the look of things, it would be yet another wet period of several days smack in the middle of the days I’d need to be on the road…
As luck would have it, I was chatting on the phone with Flask, when he reminded me of what lay just ahead… That was Saturday morning… My next appointment wasn’t until the following Tuesday. Ordinarily one good day in the saddle, or two easy days on longcut back road routes, so Monday at the latest, more likely Sunday morning were the times for KSU. It did not look good either day! What’s more things would be going downhill later on Saturday, as well… Maybe another looksee and reconsideration was in order… HEY!!!
If we were to leave right then, we stood a reasonable chance of making it far enough north to get out of the glide path of a particularly mean looking blob of dark green on the weather map moving along the Gulf coast and headed for our neck of the woods! I made the call and hurriedly got it in gear, with AOS in near record time! Oh yeah, we were on a mission for sure, but not doing this meant time away from our girl of a week or so, and… We needed to make this happen! We did.
Straight shot north up I-75, as there was no time for happy meanderings along a preferred route at a more leisurely pace; we had miles to make and only a brief window of opportunity… Each time I gazed westward at the sky, ominous black clouds on the horizon reminded me that fanny fatigue ain’t all that big of a deal… well, when compared to riding through a downpour, anyway… Nope, determined attention to the task at hand… Still had to make sure we weren’t the fastest vehicle out there, though, as Smokey Bear ain’t interested in excuses, only his own scorecard…
As near as I could figure, we needed to get north of Tifton, GA, at a minimum. Starting there, each time I stopped I checked the local forecast for the following day to see if they’d be clear or not… I finally felt safe enough to stop for the evening in Perry, GA… Over three hundred miles that afternoon, but still daylight when we packed it in… with plenty of time to visit Georgia Bob’s BBQ for a tasty reward…
Looks like good weather for this part of the southland for the next week, so… unlike what is and will be going on south of us… I patted myself on the back and settled-in for a restful evening… which of course did not include any TV news programs! With great satisfaction, I reflected upon how our girl and I would be together doing what we do… celebrating our good fortune rather than lamenting missed opportunities…
My annual physical is scheduled for next Friday, but after that and assuming no surprises, nothing is on the calendar for several weeks… YEA! Who knows, there just might be a bit of wandering and wondering for us to play around with… No kidding, it could happen…
In case you’re wondering, YES! It is so good to be back at it again! That Hattiesburg jaunt with Bert had been a great outing, but it had not come close to sating my ravenous appetite for riding adventure… Only lots more riding has any hope of doing that… and I ain’t giving any odds on that sating happening anytime soon! Nope, just lots more riding as far as the eye can see…

Hello DDT....I envy your desire and ability to ride as much as you do. I am 70 and still have the desire to ride a lot but life has a way of slowing that down. My wife keeps me busy with her needs around the house, my 4 grandkids in college, high school, and middle school expect me to be at their school and life events, and it seems nowadays I have a doctor or dental appointment at least once a week. However, I still manage a ride out if state at least once a year, and every now and again the weather gods and the rain and my obligations converge together and grant me a day of riding locally. Today is one of those days. It is 9:30 am Sunday right now and there is a zero chance of rain, 50 degrees, and I am 62 miles from home in Sealy Tx eating a darn good breakfast at Tonys restaurant. 3 eggs, bacon, hassbrowns, and a huge biscuit for $5.95. Cant beat it. The sun is out, the Valkyrie is running great, and life is good. Probly will get in about 250 miles today on backroads just taking it easy. Dont get to ride as much as I would like....but when I step back and look.....I am blessed.

Bruce's and other's adventures are always inspiring and get the juices going to fire it up and go somewhere even if that destination is unknown. Just finished some of my wife's biscuits and sausage gravy. Have that warm belly feeling, time to fire the fat lady up and do something, even if it ain't right. Bruce, thanks for providing that posting, it was all I needed. The "honey do" list is gonna have to wait. Rams

I had to look. Now I'm hungry. https://georgiabobs.com/ Glad to hear you're out on the road, and in the BBQs again. Sounds like you've got an unsupressable 'womple issue, and you're gonna get it cured!

Digger,
All you've said is so true! Glad you are able to eek-out at least some riding now and then - beats the heck out of no riding at all! I know Sealy, TX! I've stayed there several times over the years, even sparked a gal in that hood for awhile... Your breakfast sounds pretty doggone awesome, too! Do what you can do and be glad for what you have... Sounds like you are doing that and making the most of what life has thrown at ya... Still, I'll keep an eye out for ya down the road... just in case. Thanks for the comments and anecdote...
DDT
Ron,
I love biscuits 'n gravy!!! Varying degrees of quality and skill used in the composition of those culinary masterpieces of course, like with everything else, but that is still one of my very favorite treats! Only... Gorging myself on that shear delight surely means a nap will not be long in coming! No fooling, I get seriously heavy eyelids soon after the intake of even modest amounts of that wonderous example of Devine blessing... so, I have to plan accordingly... Either that or I have to pass on the grub entirely... Naps are OK in my book! I even travel with a chair specifically for that purpose... Compensation for the inability to say no to oneself is just another necessity along the path of life...
DDT
Seth,
I undeniably do have a 'womble urge as you stated, that is... a demanding task master! I may pursue a cure, but I'm also confident there is not one known to man... or at least to this one anyhow. No complaints or regrets, however, so I go merrily forth doing what must be done!
The BBQ is a collateral benefit and not the main reason, of course, but again I have no complaints! Had to settle, though, for Mexican last evening, but, hey... that's a pretty doggone good occasional substitute! I'm just proud to be here!!!
DDT
Ron,
No problem, amigo... we all do that. Heck I've been blaming others for my own activities that fail to capture endorsement from a 'boss' for as long as I can remember! It's just a common, essential courtesy every man pays to all others... All part of any sensible survival plan! BTW, feel free to blame me for any upcoming adventures we may undertake... I'll be doing the same with you...

Keith,
Yeah, it was a very good call, as it turns out... Cooler than I'd expected, but fab nonetheless! Following the blitz up I-75 to Perry Saturday afternoon, the rest of the way was smooth sailing for two days on back roads, with nothing but blue skies, and light traffic... I stopped at a little store in the middle of nowhere, and the guy ahead of me at the counter asked if I knew so-in-so just down the road... he rode a big ol' Harley.
Nope, I'm from Florida just passing through, I'd responded... The lady behind the counter then said, "What the heck are you doing here?!" It was one of those, 'if ya have to explain, you're wasting your time' moments, but I offered some sort of reply anyway. I could tell by the blank stare in her eyes I wasn't getting through...
I know I'm exactly where I want to be when something like that happens!!! I also know I've made the right call when my land lady calls and complains about all the rain at home... I just love it when things work out so nicely... Topped it all off with a visit to Jan's Beach House last evening with Sam and Cuz... Yep, a really good call indeed...
