They said on the radio today that after Wednesday we're 'sposed to go WAY under freezing, and not get ABOVE freezing again until Saturday afternoon...

...on the bright side, should help keep the 'skeeter population down this spring!

Looks like Dag is the winner.... if you could call it that.
We have the orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime trees covered to protect from the freezing weather.....
Had some grapefruit martini's tonight....sitting by the fireplace after getting out of the hot tub.....life is still pretty good!!!!

This morning the weather guy on the radio started off:

"And the forecast for tomorrow is sunny with a high in the mid 30's.... Oh wait... That's the forecast for Anchorage, Alaska... The forecast tomorrow for Dallas, Texas is partly cloudy and a high in the mid TWENTIES....."

Did a little research and this is what I found:

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX

THE COLDEST NIGHT IN TEXAS HISTORY

COURTESY OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LUBBOCK TX

FEBRUARY 1899 WAS A VERY COLD MONTH...THANKS MOSTLY TO A BITTERLY COLD OUTBREAK FROM THE 11TH THROUGH THE 13TH. IN FACT...NOTHING IN THE HISTORY OF TEXAS QUITE COMPARES TO FEBRUARY 12TH 1899.

SOME OF THE COLDEST WEATHER THAT EVER HIT TEXAS OCCURRED ON FEBRUARY 12TH OF THAT YEAR. THE LOWEST TEMPERATE EVER RECORDED IN THE STATE OCCURRED AT TULIA IN SWISHER COUNTY IN THE EXTREME SOUTHERN PANHANDLE. THE THERMOMETER DROPPED TO 23 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. HOWEVER...THERE WERE UNOFFICIAL REPORTS THAT WERE EVEN COLDER...30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO...THAT NIGHT AT TWO OTHER LOCATIONS (WOLF CREEK AND AT A SITE SOUTHEAST OF PERRYTON...BOTH IN OCHILTREE COUNTY IN THE NORTHERN PANHANDLE).

Even lower than that.... the air won't hold a lot of moisture at -40c.... it  freezes and falls out of the air column. Of course 'relative humidity' is a 'temp/water in air' calculation....... Look again at the chart  in Dags post.....

How 'bout a "virtual party"? That way I won't be drinking alone. Not that that has ever held me up before! I am just afraid someone will want to go for a ride and I'll be too inebriated to ride. Better excuse than the cold, I guess!

We could have a virtual party some evening in the chat room. We gather there every now and then. It's kind of fun talking to people all over the country. But Jeff, sorry, no virtual fire place. We CAN roll the dice though!

Yes, we use the same formula to calculate relative humidity and horse power.

Relative humidity from temperature and dewpoint
If you know the temperature and the dewpoint, and want to obtain relative humidity, the formulas are as follows:
W=[(Tc-Twb)(Cp)-Lv(Eswb/P)]/[-(Tc-Twb)(Cpv)-Lv]

W=actual mixing ratio of air
Cp=specific heat of dry air at constant pressure(J/g)~1.005 J/g
Cpv= specific heat of water vapor at constant pressure(J/g)~4.186 J/g
Lv=Latent heat of vaporization(J/g)~2500 J/g
Tc=air temperature in degrees Celsius
Twb=wet bulb temperature in degrees Celsius
Eswb=saturation vapor pressure at the wet bulb temperature(mb)
P=atmospheric pressure at surface~1013 mb at sea-level

Horsepower from attitude and color code
If you know the attiude of the rider and the color code of his bike, and want to obtain horsepower, the formulas are as follows:
Hp=[(At-Vcc)(Hc)-Ia(Abil/P)]/[-(At-Vcc)(Csk)-Lv]

Hp=horse power
Hc=specified amount of hair on the chest(J/g)~1.005 J/g
Csk=communication skills(J/g)~4.186 J/g
Ia=influence ability(J/g)~2500 J/g
At=Attitude (scale from 1 to 10)
Vcc=Valkyrie color code
Abil=argumentation ability(mb)
P=atmospheric pressure at surface~1013 mb at sea-level

Have I been working in the space program too long if my first thought about "attitude of rider" was to think of it as "orientation in space"?

Side note:  If they did indeed use Celsius, rather than Kelvin, that would explain the original confusion.  Negative temperatures would cause that equation to go wonky.
