On my trike, with the engine running and in neutral, I tried pulling in the clutch and kick it directly into 2nd gear instead of down into 1st. It won't go, I get major gear rattling and no meshing...it won't go in. Tried it twice with the same results. Going from 1st up to 2nd or any other gear...no problem. So here's what I'd like to have some of you check; put it in neutral, with the motor running pull in the clutch and see if it can be kicked into 2nd directly from neutral. Let me know your results, I don't recall ever trying that on my old Tourer, never had a need to & not sure why this strikes me as unusual when it won't mesh. Any thoughts?

I have done this before. I can go directly into 2nd gear from neutral just the same as into 1st gear.

should not be an issue going from neutral to 2nd gear vs. 1st at first startup.
ONLY thing on my 2001 Valk I/S that does not work well shifting is when it is super HOT out and cycle has been running say over 1 hour or more and stuck in traffic or at stop lights and I am in neutral for whatever reason, the darn foot shifter peg sometimes will NOT go down into 1st gear stays in neutral. That really sucks though when in traffic at a stop light with vehicles behind me. Luckily, I rarely put it back into neutral when stopped in traffic not a good idea anyways to do that.
My kids OLD 1985 honda v30 500cc magna likes to go upon cold startup only into 2nd gear first vs. going down to 1st gear at first. It will go into 1st gear at cold startup when in neutral but likes to JUMP a little forward when clutch is in vs. when in 2nd gear. Other than that, it runs fine, so he just when starting up COLD ONLY shift up into 2nd gear then immediately down into 1st gear before taking off.

Yeah Oss, think you're right. Since I plan to have this thing a few years I'm really tempted to find a low mileage motor and throw it in there. Do that as opposed to pulling it and splitting the case...let someone else do it. I've done that a few times on the old flat fours in the early Wings, but now I've reached the point where I just want to ride. If I decide to take the route of replacing the motor, I'll try and wait till after summer riding.

I would keep my eyes open as you say for different motor, but why not just drive it and enjoy it? If in neutral does not go into 2nd gear is that much of a concern since start off 99 percent of the time in 1st gear right?

That't my plan, I always start off in 1st anyway. I just happened to unintentionally try to go from N to 2nd and was surprised it didn't want to go and the gears were rattling in there and not meshing. Actually, I feel it's more from the clutch not doing its job. Time and mileage will tell I guess.

Good luck, your three weeks of summer are just around the corner. [A guy who owns a convertible in Wisconsin is an optimist and hopes summer falls on a weekend.]
