...guitars that had the same same specs in every way (top wood, shape, size, etc. ) except the back and sides were Amazon Rosewood on one and African Blackwood on the other. I was struck by how much they overlapped in terms of their overall tonal character. They were both exceptional and initially I couldn't tell which one I preferred. The amazon was a bit drier in the low mid bass frequencies while the african had a tad bit more complexity and sustain, but both were really similiar. The trebles were also fairly similar, both clear, transparent, and full. with the african having a little more bloom/ring to them.I've played a couple of guitars that sounded pretty good. Bloom? Dry? Transparent? As with a lot of things, "I don't get it"... -Mike "double darkside with inside-out spark plugs..."

Not my words.
Like this?
Deep purple colour. Aromas of rich dark currants, nectarine skins, gushing blackberry, but lots of fragrant tobacco, rich soil, white flowers, smashed minerals and metal. Medium-bodied and saucy but racy acidity stabilises the wine nicely with the robust tannins. Deep red currants and ripe cherries, laden with mocha, loamy soil, charred herbs, pencil shavings, roasted hazelnut. Dense like characters that make it perfect for cellaring, however it is drinkable straight away once you expose it to the earth’s atmosphere. This is a delicious Sonoma Cabernet! Has been matured for 24 months in 2 year old 55% Tronçais and 45% Vosges oak.

A real artist can tell alot about their instrument based on what it is constructed from, and how well it is put together, from the sound and intonation of the instrument while being played. There is a world of difference between a $2500 string bass and a $16,000 string bass (I usually play a $2500 one, but a violin shop let me try out the $16,000 one). While I can appreciate the differences, I'm not a professional making a livelyhood, so It makes no sense for me to get the $16,000 one. I could probably get more out of a $5000 bass than I can from my $2500 one (built in 1963).

Oh yeah... here's me playing a $40,000 1944 D-28... I could way tell it was good. I didn't know if it was transparent or not, though... -Mike "not a real artist..."

For the basic playing I do on my guitars, the type and brand of string makes the most difference in the sound I'm looking for. Any decent and straight acoustic guitar with a solid top can sound good if the player is good...better the player, the "better" the guitar sounds. I've never been, nor am I ever likely to be, in that category of a real player who can make an average guitar or other musical instrument sound "better", or where a top quality instrument becomes a necessity .

I'm glad they identified the Sonoma Caberneti, because I was thinking they were talking about Red Ripple. Not made since 1984 (what a shame).
