The Colonial Pipeline Was Fine, But Its Owner Shut It Down To Make Sure They'd Get Paid Correctly

The cyber attack that shutdown the Colonial pipeline causing a gas panic and stoking fears of gasoline shortages, didn’t actually shut down the pipeline. It impacted the billing system at the Colonial Pipeline Co., which shut it down because they were worried about how they’d collect payments.

Those stupid bastids paid the ransome. And now we gotta pay on the other end. Only saw a panic shortage for one day here. People eed to realize that 3/4 of the gas in the US is in cars already at any given time. Dont panic get gas when needed not when you think you need it.

If that is true, I and I have not tried to verify the story referenced here, it just gave an excuse for the "Federal Government" to take charge of security for things like the "pipeline".

That is not a good thing.

All one has to do to see how good the Feds are at making things better is to purchase a new "gas can" for filling your lawn mower, ect.

I doubt Colonial actually owns the fuel moving through its pipeline. More likely, multiple buyers and sellers, like refiners and producers, pay a per unit fee to transport batches of their products while they retain ownership. It's not unlike manufacturers and retailers paying a trucking company to transport their goods. With millions of dollars worth of fuel flowing through a pipeline, not knowing who owns what would be an economic and legal disaster.

I've read that medical providers have also paid ransoms when their systems are attacked. Clearly the hackers have figured out that the more critical the industry, the more likely it is they'll get paid, and paid well.

Hacking extortionists should be rewarded with J-dams.

Yeah, and if it's in Russia, just notify them it was a public service, and no charge.
