So I noticed this today and wonder if this is normal? It appears to be leaking fluid. I remember changing the fluid when I first bought it. Is this normal? any help greatly appreciated

Since there is no answers, I thought I would reply.

I loaded your picture, but can't tell if/where there might be oil. Looks like the drive paint is coming off.

The air breather, chrome piece, is not removable. If the oil was overfilled, there have been others who had oil come out the top while driving and the oil heats up.

It is sensitive to the quantity that is put in and how, so it is easy to over fill. How long ago did you change the oil.

When you touch the oil, can you figure out what it might be.

How about a shock leaking oil, or are our OEM ones only springs?

Yes, its oil. I have wiped it off. I had not considered the shocks may be leaking. Guess I'll check those out. I believe someone said I have progressive shocks. I know they are not standard. That chrome button piece is not removable? That's where I filled the oil when I changed it.

You screwed up I’m afraid. That is just a breather.

Well, there's your issue. That is removeable but only if you break it. That chrome piece is the breather cap. There is a drain bolt very near the bottom center of the drive unit. At the read middle is a large plug with 17mm nut built in. That is the fill hole. You've probably broken the breather cap mount and overfilled it because the manual states that proper filling is just to the bottom of the threads on the fill hole.

The good news about a pumpkin overfill is that it likely won't upchuck more than should be in there.

That staked breather hasn't come back off yet.  Give it a few gentle taps with a mallet to ensure it stays put.

With the bike level, if you pull the fill (not drain) plug, proper level will have it just barely seeping out an open fill hole.  An ounce or two overfull should be no problem, and likely wouldn't blow out the breather.  More than that, and it will.

It's a PITA working around the exhaust, so most do pumpkin dope changes at tire changes.  But it can be done on the bike with flexible tubing.

You no doubt over filled it. How much oil did you pour in?  That’s a pretty horrible picture to tell for sure but it does look like the oil is coming out of the vent. It will only do that if it is significantly overfilled. It only takes 150 cc

I suppose it could be overfilled. I do recall measuring out the oils but I guess i could have made a mistake. Thank you for the input guys.

There you go, with that input of filling via the breather cap, there is most likely your issue.

Do you not have the Service Manual? A PDF copy can be found here.
http://valkyrienorway.com/download.html

I wasn't sure on the side fill hole fill, either on the side stand or standing straight up. But if drained, the 150cc from Jeff, I was fairly sure on. But then, I do it on the bike, not the bench, and fill till it leaks out.

Just snug that fill hole bolt, or you can strip it.

Most how-to's you can find on the forum, either already a how-to in Shoptalk, or searched threads. I always look for a couple of different ones, to get more information. That and the service manual help a lot.

Place some rage under the drive. Open the fill hole. Stand the bike up for a little while, seal the hole, and wipe all the oil up. You should be good to go.

If you do it on the bike. Drain, lean it to the right side to get a more complete drain then fill it on the side stand. When you pour in 150cc while on the side stand none will leak out. Much neater that way.

I do have the paper manual but i dont recall if I read it or not for changing that oil. I guess I figured that was the fill hole and yes it was hard to remove but it came off and fit snugly back in when I replaced it. So do i need to replace that whole piece where I removed the breather from? or should I be ok as long as breather stays put?

It should be ok as long as it stays on there. Don’t remove it again. But I would drain and fill with 150cc of good synthetic hypoid gear oil before riding again.

gear oil usually has its own smell, sorta like Scotch, not the good stuff  - smell some fresh gear oil and you will see what I mean, must be one of the additives maybe.

Its the high sulphur content of the oil that smells.
