A week of 95-100 degree days in Denver so I decided I would do my first maintenance on the rear wheel splines.  Bike is new to me as of last August, and it looked as if it was well maintained (about 35K miles).  Turns out the grease was all dried out and about 25% of the spline is worn off of the Flange - perhaps a little less on the mating splines in the final drive gear.I would post pictures if I could figure out how.

After perusing lots of postings about that I recall seeing one between Ricky-D and someone else (sorry, cant remember who off the top of my head) that made it sound like the "female" splines on the final drive gear are pressed into the gear and could be pressed out and replaced?  If I understood that correctly I could purchase a new Flange for the wheel and a new set of final drive gears, pull the gear and swap the worn gear splines with the new?  The gear could be bolted back in and since the shim was not messed with no checking of the pinion gear to helical gear would be required. That way I have new splines, and I don't mess with all the grief of swapping the pinion & helical gear set?   Expensive, but I don't see a cheaper way.

Do I have this right? Undecided

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

That's how I did it except I used the splines from a 1500 GW that was in good condition that I found on eBay. I have done one for another Valk pilot the way you are suggesting,, expensive, but he is on the road.

I've seen dry, rusty drive splines with virtually no wear. It's likely the wear resulted from misalignment due to an improper torque sequence when installing the wheel. But it doesn't matter now.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I plan on running it as-is and monitor the wear this Summer.  And I guess I'll start shopping ebay for a potential replacement, but at least I have a plan if it goes South on me!

Clean the parts up and lube it with plenty of moly paste, it's your best protection.
