Got a Harley buddy wanting to go to Alaska in 2022.    I looked into that about 15 yrs ago and decided not to do it.    If I remember….from Houston Tx to the Montana /Canadian border is not even Halfway.   Google maps shows 4,131 miles from Houston to Anchorage.    Also I believe you had to cross 400 miles or so on a loose gravel road.    Would be a 3 week trip for me back then.   Am I way off base on these facts?    Has anyone here done that trip in the last 10 years or so?    If so what about gas availability?    What about accomodations on the road?    Ive also always heardcthat your paint job takes a beating from the gravel.    Just wondered if any of you have done this.

One of Daniel Meyer's books is about his Alaska adventure on a Valk.

Dirty Dan did it on a Valk.

DDT has done it a few times on a Valk...

Sometime I'll tell my story of my aborted trip to do it and all the odds stacked against me, but I will do it some day.

Very little gravel any more. The only you are likely to encounter would be on road repair sections. As far as time goes, it’s just a matter of how much you want to take.

While I haven't seen a lot of CONUS from the seat of my Valkyrie (well, maybe half the states, I don't track that), this is an adventure I've always wanted to partake in.   Please keep us updated on how this progresses.   Having gone on several cross-country "solo" trips, it seems like that is always when things go south, a small group of riders would be far more fun (IMHO) and a much safer way to go when that inevitable situation arises.   Just curious but, is our northern border open for crossing?

I rode up in 2018. That was my third trip up. Two on GoldWings and last on my Valk. Not much unpaved left unless you hit Top of the World Highway, the Dalton Highway, or the Dempster. You can find dirt road, but my first trip up back in 1982 showed that they maintain the unpaved parts well. It is still my favorite trip for scenery and fun.

I did it to Fairbanks in 2016. Great trip. Just do it. Plan out your route carefully and you will have no problem with gas if you pay attention to details.

I'd love to make a trip to Alaska - when it's NOT cold.

I went to (and from) Anchorage once.  In a KC-10 (USAF tanker)

At 10 bux each way (from SoCA), you couldn't beat the price.  Smiley

Not the lap of luxury, but what do you expect for 10 bux?  Grin

Like others here said... if you have the hankering to do it... you should. FYI, there's a small group of us here in BC that would be available for offering up tips and suggestions for places to see, stop, etc while you're riding through this Province or the Yukon, and we also collectively hold a small stash of 1500 Valkyrie spare parts such as alternators, u-joints, tires, shocks, etc for anyone in emergency need. Might even get someone to escort you for a few miles through our Province  cooldude

While I would not mind riding my Valk for that kind of a trip - the spousal unit couldn't handle it. My trip will be by cage (when we ever get a chance to do it...).

I know several folks who ride up to Alaska on their Valks and flew their wives in to Anchorage, rented a car for a week to sightsee with their wives, then ride home.

Just remember, it's a hard and fast man-code rule that at some point on the ride you must listen to this, at least once:

It's a great song (even better movie) regardless of whether you're on the road to AK or not, but yeah it would definitely be appropriate. I remember on my 3200 mile ride to Morgantown Inzane, crossing the border from KY to WV, I broke into song.... "Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong....West Virginia..."  Smiley

All I'm gonna say is you have excellent taste in music.   Sure hope you can carry a tune.  Wink
