Man, I saw that on the news today.  Terrible.

Last count was only 1 death, but that will raise soon.

Over 50 apartments at 1:30am. Shocked

I'm betting either sink hole or somebody compromised the ground level structural posts.

Experts who had studied the building as recently as last year said the building was unstable and had been sinking since the 1990s.

My understanding is that Florida is sinking on a yearly average.   Wouldn't surprise me if there was a void below the foundation.   There's always the possibility of a boiler blew up or, even terrorism but, I'm thinking more likely a sink hole of some kind.

Was watching the videos of it falling and the first thing that fell straight down was the center of the building. Then the rear half fell almost straight down but inward towards the center.

Yep, and it happened in the middle of the night. Last I heard over 100 had been rescued but 99 are still missing.

Building was settling 2MM/yr for 20 years ! No one thought something like this would happen ?!

That building came down right now ! It didn't screw around, it just fell in on itself immediately.

Ya have to wonder if the residents were ever made aware the building was sinking.   If so, then they rolled the dice and lost.
If they didn't know and that sinking is the cause of the collapse, then we've got a whole different situation.

The earthquake they had in Istanbul some years ago dropped hundreds of concrete buildings (all or part).  Many were newer construction.  It was discovered the builders left out all or part of the required rebar to save money.  Well done there boys.

Watching the vid, it does appear the roof collapsed first.

But.

All it would take is just 1 or 2 of the ground level posts to be compromised, either by sinking, deterioration, displacement or overloading for this type of structure collapse.

Once the load support is lost, the additional load transferred to the remaining posts is overwhelming and a collapse is imminent.

These buildings with open parking in the ground and second levels are more prone to collapse than buildings with more bottom level structure, as has been discovered in CA earth quakes.

Florida State Building Code required this building to be "recertified" every 40 years and it was in process for that certification.

Probably that time frame will be modified.

It's been reported the roof was in the middle of a upgrade.  If the contractor over stacked materials on the roof in one area, possibly over a already, but not known, compromised post, the additional weight could have caused the post to fail.

If the failure started on the 12th floor or the 1st, the final outcome would be similar.

It's been reported 159 are missing.  Tragic.

Really tragic.  When one builds on old swamp/sandy land, one could expect some settling.  2mm a year is not much, but over time will have an effect.  Especially is only part of structure is sinking.  On wonders if that could have caused the problem.

Hopefully it wasn't construction practices.

It has been reported that one resident had heard the building creaking in the days leading up to the collapse.

It has been reported that one resident had heard the building creaking in the days leading up to the collapse.

Just saw a report on NBC that there's a 2018 Engineering Report showing major structural damage discovered on this structure.   Wasn't paying close attention at the time but, something about corrosion and concrete structurally unsound.

Edited:  NBC just ran a more complete report.   The engineering survey detailed significant structural issues that needed repair back in 2018.   The firm provided this report to the Condo Board.
One has to wonder why these issues were not addressed.
