The more I look at drivers on You Tube, the more I think a camera would be a good idea. Amazon has many choices but none of the manufacturers have a familiar name. Anybody want to recommend a good front and maybe rear system??

I've always been afraid to put one one, figured I would end up on YouTube in one of the worst motorcycle crash videos.

I have been considering this one:

Just haven't pulled the trigger yet.  The K5 looks good too - just more dinero than I want to spend.

If you tend to ride/drive a bit on the aggressive side, just a reminder that 5th amendment protections against testifying against yourself do not apply to equipment you own...

I.E. That same cam can be used against you too...

(That's my understanding at least,  if one of our local professional shysters could verify or refute please do.)

Not saying don't get one, just saying it could cut both ways if you do a stupid...

Dash cams and cell phone dumps can be used against you, but I think they must ask to look at them, and if you refuse, they have to get a warrant.  (I think, but not certain, and this is also a matter of individual PD policy).

Last fall, we had two women drivers do a head on in my 25mph subdivision drive, in daylight.   crazy2

I went out to talk to the cops, and said someone had to be on their phone, did you dump them?  He said probably so, but we don't mess with phones when there is minimal human damage fender benders.

So just like talking to the cops, you do so at your own risk, and the same with consenting to searches.  It's generally a bad idea even though most of us law abiding types like to cooperate with good policeman everywhere.

If it's a bad one with potential (civil and/or criminal) liabilities, it's best to politely not cooperate.  Or give a general denial of fault, but don't answer questions.  If they say they will hold you until they can get a warrant, the answer is.... OK, I'll wait if I have to (because usually that's a hollow threat, with no instant warrant possible).

A few years ago my wife was hit at an intersection.  Both she and the other driver claimed they had a green light.  Luckily after a week or so the officer that made the report called and they were able to retrieve video of the intersection showing the other driver at fault and running the red light and he was given a citation.  If they hadn't been able to retrieve that video both parties would have ended up filing claims against their own insurance and no one would have been at fault.  That was enough for us to look into dash cams.

So I dipped my toe by buying a cheap model made by Blue Sky Sea, Model B1W.  To me for the price it does fantastic,  no bells or whistles just 1080p video.  After I had it for a year or so I moved it to be a rear facing and replaced the front with a Viofo A119 V3 that has more features & higher resolution.

With the addition of Dashcam Vierwer software I can see video from the Viofo with maps of the route taken as it reads the gps coords, display speed and other features.   Both are entry dash cams but I find them both to be adequate for my use and have been mostly happy with them overall.

If you want to research more models take a look at this forum.  There's lot's of posts by some pretty smart folks when it comes to camera's and their operation.  In addition you can read what issues that may be present with certain models.

If you get a dash cam, don't use a cheap Micro SD card. Since the video gets overwritten many times cheap cards can fail before you know it. Use a High Endurance card.
