It’s official!  I no longer  need to be an honorary VRCC member.  Yay!  I am now the proud owner of a 1998 Tourer.
As soon as I (meaning DarkSideR) get it lowered, I’ll see y’all down the road.

Congratulations Janice ! Like John said, you’ve always been a full fledged member.  cooldude It looks like it already has lowered progressive shocks. What are Josh’s plans for further lowering ? Different seat, tires ?

Janice,

A new chapter begins... I'd figured you and 'BOB' would always be an item... but... I agree with Rob & John, BTW, you've always been a 'full' member... as you are most definitely one of us. Good luck with your new ride. I hope y'all bond the way our girl and I have, and that all the memories to come make this one of your best decisions. I'll see ya when I see ya...

Janice,
Congratulations on the purchase!  Jardene exhaust!…..I am jealous!  And it’s the fast black model!
I never heard anyone say that you were just an honorary member.  What I did always hear is that you are definitely one of us.

Enjoy the new ride!  Is that BOB the II ?   It would not be right to call it BOB junior!  Maybe Sir BOB.  Or Bada** BOB.

Y’all are so awesome!  Thank you for the love!

BoB and I will continue to make a few memories together; just probably not covering the distances we have previously.  I am going to take him back to Bama and use him for puttering around there.  My new fella will stay at our place in Colorado.  Since we are here all summer, he will become my new cruiser.

As for lowering, we are looking at going to 11.5” Progressives on the back and going to a low profile tire.  We will slip the front forks 1/2 - 3/4”. He already has the Ultimate low rider seat.  Doing a “nose job” on the seat has been suggested, so if needed, that may get done too.  Hopefully that will be enough to let me feel stable.

I am super excited and can’t wait to take him out on my own.  I rode behind Josh today for the test ride as well as for a ride down to Deckers for lunch.  I just gotta get him personalized for me.

I am thinking the DRU may be a nice “first journey” for us.  We’ll see.

I won’t be riding from Bama to CO each spring.  I will be making trips leaving from here though.  Coming across country in May has become a real challenge …. Rain …. Snow …who knows!  I am hoping to make trips during the summer/fall months.  Hopefully I can make more of the rally’s this way too.

Just an observation. The seat in the picture ^^ is not a low rider. Maybe you have a different seat that is. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Guess you'll have to ride BoB to Mississippi Madness next April.   Although I'd love to see your new Valkyrie, that can wait for another time.   Maybe at DRU this year.

That’s what we thought too, so Josh took his low rider seat off his tourer and put it on my bike. They were the same height. The tag under mine is worn off.  We were thinking that it may just be an old model.  The guy said he bought it around 2008 and it was advertised to be the lower one, but I have no way of being absolutely certain.  It has been suggested that I have the nose cut down on it.  If the tires and shocks don’t do what I need, I’ll try that.

Thanks!

...  It has been suggested that I have the nose cut down on it.  ...

I'm not certain who would suggest a "nose job" but that won't make the saddle any lower.

You could take some of the padding out of the place you sit but that has its drawbacks.  You could take the saddle apart and try to narrow it.

My advice if you just need an inch or so is wear boots with a bit more at the soles and heels.

I was the one that suggested the nose job.  The nose job is mostly narrowing of the nose; on the ultimate it also involves some cutting off some to the nose rise.  When stopped, these adjustments allow more foot on the ground (I think this is especially true for women).  When I sit on an unaltered Ultimate Low Boy, I do sit lower, but I'm on my tiptoes when stopped.  I couldn't use an Ultimate seat, until Des did one with a nose job for me ('cause he got tired of seeing me on the Corbin).

Hey Janice,
This is the most comfortable seat I ever had.  I can't use it, because it won't fit the interstate tank.  Let me know if you might want it.  It's gray ostrich with blue piping... might look good on the black.

Looking at Connie's picture, I see floorboards.  (Probably Cobras)

Both my bikes have them and I love them, but floorboards are not exactly helpful for people with limited leg reach. (says the guy with 29.5" pants inseams)

For me, on the gen 1 Valk the floorboards aren't in the way.  But on the gen 2 Valk, they are a bit cumbersome.

Well I do fine with them too.  But they will interfere with straight down legs (hit your ankles), or you make a conscious effort to move your feet behind them.

I just mentioned it to Josh as he puts together a short bike for Miss Janice.

Whatever else is done on the bike, Carl's advice on some built up soles on a pair of boots is a good one (not high heels).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/184270538325

I'm a big fan of swat boots for riding, with really great grippy soles, and they make all kinds of womens tach boots.   https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/p/military-and-tactical/womens-ua-stellar-tactical-boots/1276374.html

I may be interested in the seat.  I’d want to wait until we get everything else done to see how close I am to where I need to be.  Does it have a driver backrest?  Brand?  Price?

Thank you!

I just mentioned it to Josh as he puts together a short bike for Miss Janice.

Whatever else is done on the bike, Carl's advice on some built up soles on a pair of boots is a good one (not high heels).

I'm a big fan of swat boots for riding, with really great grippy soles, and they make all kinds of womens tach boots.   https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/p/military-and-tactical/womens-ua-stellar-tactical-boots/1276374.html

Thanks for the suggestion on boots. I had not thought of that until earlier when someone suggested Doc Marten platform boots.   I looked at those tonight. I could actually gain 1.5” which is definitely appealing.

I have a pair of boots that I purchased last year from 5-11 Tactical.  I really like them, so I may see about getting the soles built up.  There again, I’ll wait to see what the tires and shocks give me before I decide on boots, but I do appreciate the insight.

Hey Janice,
This is the most comfortable seat I ever had.  I can't use it, because it won't fit the interstate tank.  Let me know if you might want it.  It's gray ostrich with blue piping... might look good on the black.

I may be interested in the seat.  I’d want to wait until we get everything else done to see how close I am to where I need to be.  Does it have a driver backrest?  Brand?  Price?

Thank you!

It does have a backrest.  It's Corbin, but don't freak out, it was specially made... free poured, so not hard like regular Corbin.  I went to Corbin factory and had it made... sits low and forward and has the nose job.  I've never really considered selling it, so I haven't thought about a price; not looking for a fortune.  I still think you would be happier with seat alteration than low profile tires.

You can't do much about the length of your life, so focus on the width.

Most tach boots (which are built like heavy duty high top tennis shoes) are not re-solable (like the picture I posted).  On the subject of tach boots, you want a sole with a wide heel, like a cross trainer tennis shoe, NOT one with a narrow heel, like running shoes.

When I learned to ride and went through an MSF course (decades ago), they taught you to only put your left foot down, with your right foot on the rear brake pedal at all stops (to stop you rolling fore or aft on uneven pavement).

With a very slight bike lean left (so the bike doesn't start to go over the the other way)(and left foot down), and your right foot on the brake pedal, it's really a very stable platform.  Now sometimes with a pothole or strong crosswind, you might need both feet down, but usually not.  Both feet down at all stops is not necessary, and thinking you have to is really a handicap.

This is an especially good technique for shorter (legged) riders.  I'm only 5'9", and I use both methods. If I ride one of those 36" seat dirt bikes, I have to use that method.  If you have not tried or practiced this, you should.  It's easy, and builds confidence.

Watch guys at stops with both feet down have their bikes start rolling forward or backward or wobble (and then maybe grab their hand brake, or hold it still with upper body strength).  It's pretty common if you look for it.

You can lock a bike down at stops with the hand brake, but it can be tricky releasing the brake lever and rolling on the throttle with the same hand smoothly on departure, especially on a steep uphill stop.

PS: I also taught MSF  (decades ago).

Let me know when you decide on a price. You can send me an email if you prefer.

We decided not to go low profile dark side.  Josh was concerned about safety if I couldn’t get my feet solid on the ground.  Anyway, I ordered Avon’s today.  Shocks are on their way.  We will go from there.  I really appreciate all your input.  It’s great having someone to ask who has already “been there, done that”.
