a/k/a Stuffy. '99 I/S Valk Roadsmith Trike

While on my somewhat abbreviated trip before and after IZ, I had a couple events that were too close for comfort. It got me to thinking about adding cameras to the trike front and rear, especially useful here in Wisconsin. I haven't checked but am quite certain they teach tail-gating in driver's ed. classes, maybe it's offered as an elective once you've taken the main driving course. If so, I'll bet it's a popular elective.

I want one that covers front and rear, runs off bike power when under way and battery power when parked and someone hits it. If you have any experience with these things I'd like to hear about it...make & model, ease of installation, etc.

Here's one of interest.

Don't know squat about this topic but, I hope someone does.   Would like to put such a camera on both the bike and the trike.

If you run a search (I use DuckDuckGo rather than the Evil Engine) there are plenty of articles on motorcycle dash cams.  The one brand that usually tops the list is INNOVV.  They're not cheap, but appear to be very good with all the features.  If you get one be sure to use a high endurance memory card.  Cards have a finite number of write cycles, and since dash cams constantly overwrite old content memory cards can fail surprisingly quickly.

Since most motorcycles don't have a dash, is a new name needed?

New name? I don't think so since the term "dash cam" appears to be a general category under which various applications appear. In my case, the trike is a converted I/S so has a dash...loosely applying the term "dash."  Wink

Another option to consider in lieu of or in addition to is a helmet cam.... That way if you're off the bike you can still record your point of view (Thinking of a confrontation type situation.)

I would direct you to this forum to post your questions.  https://dashcamtalk.com/ Lot's of folks very knowledgeable in this area.

A couple things to be aware of is these are usually either Lithium battery or Super Capacitor.  I believe Super Capacitor wins out as they're not as prone to fail due to heat.

Another is dual cams consume twice the memory of a single Dash Cam if recording at the same fps & resolution.  Small capacity cards will fill faster so the amount of video you can keep will be limited with loop overwrite on devices that only allow small memory cards.

The processor & sensor used is an important factor and contribute much to the clarity of the video captured.  I didn't see what brand sensor was used in the link you listed so not sure they use a quality sensor or not.  I assume at the price point probably not.

Try the link I listed and read the threads thoroughly.  There are a few shills out there so be thorough in your research.

Agreed, it has become a generic term, and is stuck in the public's mind.  It's interesting how phrases stick around seemingly forever.  We still say 'dial' a phone, and things like Aspirin and Linoleum were actually trade names many years ago.

While it's true that motorcycle dash cams differ a good bit from the automotive versions, I've never heard them called anything else.
