Secrets to polishing wheels?
«
on:

I usually just use mothers aluminum polish.
Online suggests wd 40 with scotchbrite or 0000 steel wool.
Not looking to scratch my wheels.
They aren't terrible..but I have a second set..off the bike..Id like to brighten up.
Thanks.

I use Bombs Away and a terry cloth rag. They stay shiny because there’s carnauba wax in the polish they have looked like this for years now.

The only secret I know is first to scrub the heck out of them, then to polish them.
How nice they look depends on how much time and effort you want to use.
I do not care for Mothers or any of those pastes that you have to rub and rub and rub to get the crap off.
Jeff's
Bombs Away
is the very best stuff ever devised for polishing metal. It's almost like water.
White Diamond
is 2d best.
Power tools work faster than handjobs.
When you are done, a good past wax will save your shine, but will also reduce your just-polished shine by 15% (or so).
I used to go crazy, now I wash with soap and water. Dull battle ship grey is OK with me now.

I’ve heard (and going to try myself) to mount wheel on a board with the axle. Then put a sanding barrel on a drill press. Put the tire against the sander and it spins the wheel for you. Then you just hold the product against the rim and let it do the hard work for you.

I use a 50/50 mix of Mother's Carnauba Wax and Collinite Metal Wax. A spare Mother's tin serves as a mixing and storage container; you wet-polish then dry-wipe. Results are similar to Boms Away, as is the finish duration. Typically, one application lasts all season unless you get into some very nasty runoff water.
