Hello all. I was finally able to get my rear wheel off for tire replacement. Before I reinstall the wheel I would like to remove the drive shaft as well and lube it. I purchased all rubber rings and the OEM washer Thrust 42616-MAJ-G20.
Since i never done this before I was hoping to find a video on Youtube that shows the whole process, from removing the final drive and shaft, replacing the rubber rings where necessary, lubing and reinstalling it. I found few videos online but they all show some bits and pieces when spline and shaft are already taken apart, but none of them show the full process.
I was hoping that someone could give me some tips. For example, I noticed in a pictures that the front-end of the shaft has a spring and a washer. inserted on it. Is it possible that when i pull the shaft out the spring and washer may get stuck inside and i would not come out? I don't know what to expect when I pull the shaft out but I want to check the the shaft front spline in in good shape. Will it go back in easily with the washer and spring in place when trying to slide it back in to the universal join? Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question. I have the manual and there are a couple of pictures on page 12-3, but that doesn't explain much either. Thank you for any comment or suggestion you may have for me.

It’s not a stupid question. The spring and washer will stay in place. Nothing to worry about there. Have you read the write up in shoptalk ? It should help a lot. The most important thing is to put everything back together in the correct sequence.

Does anyone know if it is really necessary to replace the replace the dampers, as I see in many pictures that this is being done? Mine have a little play play but no that much. My I/S has 34K miles. I did not order them and if i do that will put my project back by a week. I would rather not do that if not necessary. Thank you.

It’s ok for the individual dampeners to have some play but once the flange is inserted there should be very little to no play twisting the flange by hand

I just did my final drive service. Not difficult at all. Once the wheel is off its pretty easy.

Just finished the rear tire and final drive project. Given that I had to go to a couple of shops to get the tire changed ( everyone is so busy and two shops would not do it until Saturday ) it took me about two days to complete. Reinstalling the shaft and the tire itself can be a little tricky with a 1500 pounds small lift. But at the end it did work, and in and in grand part thanks to you all for your help for all the good information and links which helped greatly.
My next project will be the front tire ( when i can find the match of my new Metzler ME888 Ultra ) as there seem to be a shortage. Hopefully the front tire will be a little easier.
Thank you guys.  Smiley

I'm running a Metzeler on the front.  I do like it.  Others hate it.  Just follow the manual procedure for the reinstall.  Not hard by any means, just a lot of steps that need to be done in order.  Once you do it a few times it takes 10 minutes.  20 the first time.
