Henry's Final Drive Gear Benefits:

Safer control of your Honda Goldwing with matched gearing at lower engine RPM's.

- Less fatigue during long distance riding
- Less engine wear and tear
- Less gear shifting in traffic
- Improved gas mileage

I remember the Mario replacement gearset from back in the day.

I remember BigBF's critique of such, and the sheet show that followed. Was quite entertaining.

He is dealing with an 1800. Don't know much about the 1800.

Does anyone know what the Mario gear ratio was? If I remember it was a 4th & 5th gear replacement. The Valk motor couldn't handle the lower (numerical) ratio and was a dog at best.

One of the testimonials claim to have gotten 41 MPG doing 60 MPH. That doesn't seem that farfetched for a stock Valkyrie. I went on a trip with a 'Wing riding buddy (1500). He lost 5 MPG when we ran 75 MPH on the I'state. When running the I-state I usually run 75-80 on my ST1100. 75 MPH is pretty consistently 40 MPG.

The 5th gear ratio on a late model 'Wing (1500) vs. Valk is .758 vs. .805. Go with a 'Wing transmission and do as good or better than the $1500 final drive.

I would try the tallest tire I could fit before I dropped $1500.

It's for a goldwing issue. Good link!

"..... turning to [Goldwing] online discussions regarding the same concerns from other Honda enthusiasts Henry connected with others to find what the best gear ratio match would be."

He didn't rush the job either.

"Henry sampled and tested numerous designs and modifications."

"After 4 years of developments he achieved a perfect match and accomplished dropping the RPM to 2600 cruising at 70 MPH."
[which translates into better mileage]

One of the testimonials claim to have gotten 41 MPG doing 60 MPH. That doesn't seem that farfetched for a stock Valkyrie.
My '99 CA-model Tourer wears a Memphis Batwing, I/S tank, trunk, radiator and pods, fender and wind deflectors plus assorted "safety chrome", two-way radios, etc. It retains the CA-model cams, OEM smog plumbing, has an I/S ICM and carb springs and adjustable main jet needles (Cobra). Apart from that, the intake, ignition and exhaust systems are stock, You can get an idea of the bike's weight and state of tune.

I've routinely seen 42MPG with that rig when run from 55-65MPH. Even with aches and pains creeping in, my Throttle Hand is still very strong. Thus, the follow-on:

Quote
I went on a trip with a 'Wing riding buddy (1500). He lost 5 MPG when we ran 75 MPH on the I'state.
I'll dip into the low 30s running on I-71 (our fastest area freeway) if I make an attempt to keep pace with or stay ahead of traffic. Even so, this isn't objectionable for the amount of power the bike has on tap.

My I/S is worse. 49-state cams and tuning mirrors the Tourer. No trunk (at present). That thing just wants to RUN. At 6-point speeds it dips into the mid to high 20s gas mileage.

All said, I wouldn't change anything with either (except for cosmetics).
