So was driving my 97 tourer to work this am and when I hit about 3500 rpm I'd loose drive power but the rpms would jump. Was like I dropped into neutral. As soon as I let off and rpms came back down to under 3500 it would ride smooth again. Any thoughts on what this could be? I have rebuilt the carbs recently due to sticking after sitting for to long. All vacuum lines ad fuel lines new. Pingle petcock. OEM air filter. Hoping I make it home. Should I even try to ride it home? Thanks all.

Mobil 1 the full synthetic racing. Think it's like R4 or something. 10-40 I believe. Says its wet clutch safe. So it also makes a loud noise when in gear and I pull the clutch in all the way.

Was it ever hard to use the clutch (lever travel stopped partway through the range of motion)? If so I'd suspect the clutch damper plate.

Haven't noticed any difficulty shifting? Just cruising then feels like it slips and no more forward thrust and the rpms rev way up. Like I said it's like I pulled the clutch while on the freeway.

Could be that the little hole inside the clutch resevoir at the bottom under the metal guard is plugged. If it is you will have a clutch slipping symptom like you described. Clean it out and flush clutch with dot 4

I did just flush the clutch line, very well could be something floated into there. I'll try and give it a good flush when I get home. I keep getting paranoid I broke teeth on the drive gear before rebuilding the carbs and replacing the petcock and didn't know it. Would it run at all if that was the case? What are the symptoms of a broken drive gear? Thanks for all the help everyone.

But did you clean out the bottom hole under the metal guard after empting out the resevoir? Qtips work well. The metal tab/guard is only friction fitted and comes off easily

You do know there's two small holes in the bottom of the mastercylinder...right? One is rather large and quite obvious, the other is hidden under that little removeable cover and the hole is about the size of a human hair. If it's covered or blocked at the depression it sits in, you can overlook it cuz it's so tiny.

I don’t think you need to worry about any of that. The suggestion about the TINY hole at the bottom of the master cylinder is a good one. If it is blocked it could very well be doing what you are describing.

Ok so I used a syringe and needle (I work in a hospital) and sucked out fluid by the little hole and put it back on top. Ride home had no issues. Grabbed some dot 4 on the way and sucked out everything in the reservoir and used a pick to clean it up. Refilled and will see how the rid to work tomorrow goes. Almost done building my manometer and will hopefully get to balancing carbs this weekend. Love being back on the valkyrie. Thanks again all.

Ride in to work was great no issues. Wondering what that little hole I clogged is? Is it a vent?

Smarter people might chime in with better info but I think its a sort of fluid return/vent hole that must stay cleared or you will experience clutch slippage. Im glad cleaning it out worked for you.

Correct. If it's plugged, the assembly acts as a one way valve and the slave cylinder won't fully disengage. Think of a line lock on a drag race car's front brakes.

As the fluid heats up, it expands; that vent is there to keep the pressure from building up. BTW, your brakes can do the same thing.

Noted. The brake side was not nearly as dirty when I flushed them last. I'll check it though.
