Had new tires installed on my 3-month new to me 99 Tourer. Installer called me out to show me something. The splines that I saw inside the final drive were dry and shaped like shark fins. Been a loong time since the lubrication fairy visited those splines. The driven flange was in pretty sorry shape as well.

So, the hunt begins for a replacement final drive. Ideas of where to look? Ebay, obviously, but wondering if there are other known stashes/sources.

+1

Is this something you can do yourself, or will pay the shop to do it?

I suspect the cost of fixing the Valkyrie rear drive, with the parts from the right GW drive, would be close to the same as buying a used Valkyrie drive if you can find one at a reasonable price (there is currently one on ebay for less than $500).

Just get some good pictures of the spline, make sure they are in good condition.

There are a number of final drives listed on eBay, but not one that shows good pictures of the splines and they are asking way to much. They know just as we do that the splines are all that matters.

I stand corrected Meathead. After rechecking part numbers and looking a bit closer it will not fit.Bor please disregard my last.  Meatheads post on multi years of 1500 GW hub is the best option.

My original question still applies, something you are going to do yourself, or pay the shop?

I forget who, or have the name wrong, John in Marrysville did the swap, the GW ring gear swapped into the Valk final drive. I've never done the rear, only seen it on TV/youtube. I've a GW rear drive as a spare for a just in case time.

What do you think a shop would charged, 4-8 hrs? A replacement drive is a fixed cost, $450 USD, and can be swapped out on a wheel change. Then you can fix the old one, when parts become available and help can be found. If I remember right, I paid $30 for the GW drive years ago, just the right one and price at the right time.

I think if you could find a good Valkyrie rear in good shape, this would be the way to go. As for doing the Goldwing swap. It shouldn’t take a shop near that long to do. Basically all they are doing is pressing one out, and then pressing it in another.

I have several final drives in good condition. Were you able to find what you needed?
