Brewer,
The attenuators (collection reservoirs) serve 2 purposes. First, they dampen the pulse so that it is not jumping too wildly for you to read. I like this method of dampening better than pinch clamps because it is easier to have all 6 attenuators creating equal dampening. Just a slight bump to a pinch clamp can seriously change it’s dampening effect. Secondly, each attenuator on my setup is capable of holding
ALL of the fluid in my entire system thereby trapping the fluid and ensuring that it can never reach a carburetor.
To answer your question about length of tubing: longer tubing will of course create more dampening. Other than that, and the necessity to keep all tubing and piping equall in length, I don’t believe the length is important.
This system is very sensitive! If you have even a small leak in connection to one of the carbs or if your carbs are very far out of balance, it will suck all of the fluid out of the reservoir and toward the carb with most vacuum. I believe that it is best to balance them by some other method first and then fine tune them with this setup. I have gotten close enough when I take my time to bench balance the carbs after a rebuild, however, if I get in a hurry on the bench when rebuilding them, I end up with the same problem that you are experiencing. Then I have to put a regular vacuum gauge to work so I can get close enough to use this setup.
I made this setup so long ago that I had forgotten that I ever did a write up and posted it.
