Sometimes when sleep stays stays elusive I will lay and visualize a favorite motorcycle road in my mind.

If I come to a bend and I don't remember it I can approach it from the other side and see details I couldn't remember and then continue in the original direction.

Paul,

Yes, I do. The imagination is a marvelous thing for certain!!! I sometimes do recall favorite rides/adventures on similar occasions, but any lapses in memory regarding details usually means I'd drifted off to sleep and a different 'in-flight movie' had kicked in... Anyway, I am a dreamer for sure!

If I don't take my Gabapenten - I would lay awake most nights after 2-3 hours of sleep. When you do this 10-12 nights out of 14, you get seriously sleep deprived with all that entails. Now, I only get that problem maybe 2-4 times during that same 14 day period. The problem is that my brain does not shutdown enough. Used to be an advantage - not so much anymore.

I actually slept from 2230 to 0530 last night - I feel wonderful !

Had to get an MRI a few years ago. The technician stopped to ask me how I was doing. I told her I was riding my favorite roads. Filed memories are a great asset to the sole.

Sometimes it could help to dream about nubile young females. Nah, that just keeps you up.

When I can't sleep, I close my eyes and picture myself crushing my enemies, seeing them driven before me, and hearing the lamentations of their women.

I find myself not sleeping more as time goes on. And I've lived my life on maybe 4 hours a day. The absolute stupidity in this world or country lately is beyond belief.

I like this one.   cooldude   Grin

I don't have one thought pattern to get to sleep.

Mostly, I won't go to bed at all unless I'm good and sleepy, regardless of time of day, or night.

My thought patterns to assist sleep are all soothing, relaxing ones; my favorite since childhood is sailing on a lake on a sunny-breezy day.  Wind in the rigging, gentle water sounds down the hull, gentle motion of the hull rising and falling on the small waves.  Peaceful and serene.  (Just don't eat the liverwurst sammiches mom made if you are down below in the cabin.)

And blocking out all conflict, debate, anxiety, anger, worry, and worst of all, lists of things that need done.  Get stuck on any of these, you might as well get up.  (During my high stress shystering years, I had to make a list of tomorrow's things to do before bedtime, or I could never sleep. The idea was, once the list was done, no need to worry or think about any of that in bed.)

The one serene thought process you never want use to get to sleep is the warm happy urination in the toilet dream (except it's not the toilet).   crazy2

I wish the "Imposter in Chief" would fall asleep that way.  Pretty sure he dozes off to visions of rainbows and unicorns.

a new good comfy mattress has helped me sleep some at least with my bad hip.  Only a month or two ago I was lucky to sleep 3-4 hrs per night not able to lay comfy.  Trips to chiropractor, pills, and new, softer mattress has allowed me to lay on either side or on my back without much discomfort now so now like 5 hrs sleep.    I really hate it lately though from say 11 p.m. to 3:33 a.m. asleep (almost exactly that 333 time) I wake up and the next few hrs not able to sleep much tossing and turning.

I rarely get a full say 11 p.m. to 6 a..m. full sleep probably never will sleep solid. What bites is weekends when I want to sleep in till 7 or 8 a.m. biological trained clock still wakes me up at 6 a.m..  Then, does anyone here on weekends feel like a NAP NOT doing much from say 6 to 10 a.m. after waking up???  Past few weekends I have been ZONKING out on my lazyboy recliner around 10 to near noon on Saturdays which to me means lack of sleep all week trying to catch up on sleep weekends?

Some days though driving 45 minutes into work I really feel like closing my eyes and falling asleep at the wheel caught myself dozens of times lately near closing my eyes sleeping while driving.  If I try to go to bed though before 10 p.m. I toss and turn a lot until after midnight.

Uuh, I'm pretty sure the kid who rear ended me on my Interstate was nodding off.  I would recommend discussing that one with your physician -- and mention the pills your chiro prescribed too, they might be contributing to your drowsiness.  Your doc may suggest biting the Bullet and getting that hip surgery behind you...

no prescribed pills just  ostio-bioflex pill and 2 advil in morning for any pain.  Dr. says hip via xray not that bad yet for surgery he suggested worthless trip to sports medicine.  All sports medicine dr. said after 585 bill in 15 minutes is not really much can be done in terms of physical therapy that if pain gets worse will refer me to hip dr appt. for surgery but only other 2 things was cortisone shots which are not permanent or my blood take plasma out and inject into hip socket to help promote joint tissue, supposedly 50% or better chance will help to some degree.    At least she was not like saying, yah, come in every week for physical therapy we can make hip better.    OH yah,  she suggested 2 exercises both of which could have been told to me OVER the phone vs. having any appt. at all.
