Mom - just got done with nurse screening for the place we are looking at. Memory care Lite. As soon as we can make arraingements.

Jan 31 -- MIL has a room at an assisted living / memory care center. Not too far away, but not so close she can walk home either.
that is good news, hope it is a decent care facility. I had to take my mom outta her house after falling down about 4 years ago now and one of toughest things had to do, but she was not safe at home anymore alone even with care people 2x's per day checking in on her for an hour or so each day tops. When she still had a mind left at home she told me NEVER going to leave HOME and I cannot make her got into it with her 'nicely' a tad. I dropped the subject until she fell and was in ER and DRs. said NO more home alone and surprisingly mom never fought it, but by then her mind was starting to go more so. Saw mom few days ago and she is doing so-so health/body wise but more and more so unable to speak very well lately not sure how many more months or years it will be? As far as assisted living homes go, make sure you go over unexpected 1-2x's per month to see how things are going for her. I took my mom out of 2 assisted living homes (in her 3rd now in 4-5 years) for not doing what I asked them to do. 1st one was decent food and nice living arrangements, but they just let her sleep sleep sleep all day in bed not getting her up and about when she was still able to walk on her own. 2nd one started off good but when the owner and mgr. of the place got into it, the mgr. walked up and quit and went downhill ASAP from there poor food and poor daily care, way too many trips to the ER and Dr. office that last 1 year there due to poor care. 3rd one now is better but still not great, but is safe and good food, good physical care, just not a lot of social interraction they plop her in her wheelchair everytime over there in front of a TV in common area which anything on TV she is not coherent enough to know what is going on. I knew that going in though not much social stimulation having only 6-7 residents in an 8 person facility. At least they do not let her sleep all day long in her bed. I was going to put her into another asst. living vs. the 3rd one knowing more social interraction, but the place was more so run down and darker inside, rooms much smaller, no bathroom in the room but in a common area with more people, but the price was 600 more per month and figured mom at this stage would not care not knowing who she is nor where she is at. So far has worked out any dr. appts. is in same town and they have a transport van since only way to move mom around in a wheelchair unable to stand up on her own or walk past few years. I cringe every month writing out that asst. living check out of my moms now depleting checking account funds but still remember my brother and his wife thought that his wife would stay home and be able to take care of mom some 5 years ago in their house paying them 1000 per month for care. NO way would that have worked for long maybe 1 year tops still able to walk on her own somewhat. You will be glad though in the asst. living home to not have to worry as much about 2 things at once daily. I know when mom at home was stressful knowing she could fall and get hurt extending out her stay at home a tad bit too long. One less thing to DAILY worry about is a good thing.

Feb 3 - Last night - noticed that Gwen was starting to lose hair. Didn't want it to happen, but knew it was likely. Probably be heavier loss after next Friday's chemo (Feb 11). We're as ready as we can be - 3-4 head scarves, nice new coat with hood from Duluth Trading, and WARM Sherpa hat from Vermont Country Store.

Feb 12 -
Gwen's chemo is so far, good. No naseau yet (it has been coming 3-4 days later). What is really kicking her butt is the Steroid that shoots Blood Glucose levels so much. Insulin is helping, but it is often a "tail wagging the dog" situation. Monday , her boss's boss is going to give her a bluehaired wig ... I honestly think the chemo doctors ought to do some studies and develop a better treatment plan for diabetics on chemo. We are just sort of winging it, trying to balance the 2 problems. We've gotten the support we asked for from our primary care.
MIL - seems to be adapting to the facility Ok. Certainly takes a load off of us (and I hope my blood pressure is finally heading down to normal ).

Feb 14 - Last night - noticed that the temp on the thermostat was at 70F, instead of the set 73F. Tried something to get the furnace going, no joy. Woke up to the house at ~60F. Will be calling HVAC company after I get Gwen to work, and have some portable heaters to deploy / retrieve from storage.

Just went through the HVAC deal last week, had to switch over to emergency heat for several days till the service tech could get here. It’s back running but @ 21 years old I’m on borrowed time. The tech told me that they have received notice that their suppliers are raising prices in the 40-50% range by the end of the year. OUCH! Praying for continued healing for Gwen, I have diabetes and I know the struggle is real on that front too. You guys are lucky to have each other, I think you must make a good team.

Furnace fixed - condensate pump safety switch failed, thus shutting off the whole furnace. had to replace whole pump $300, + $125 labor.
Air conditioner is like 22 - 23 years old - run it until it breaks, then replace with a new one. Furnace is a high effiecency unit, ~ 13 years old. Replacing the Air conditioner is definately a thought with that kind of price hike coming...
Yes, we do make a good team

425 furnace repair only 13 years old surely is better than 3K or so for new furnace installed, assuming it lasts 8-10 more years now. I got a break about 4 years ago my 25 year old furnace clunked out burners all rusted, etc. not worth fixing 80% 1993 furnace any longer. IMO If you get 25 years out of any appliance you done good. My fridge, electric oven, washer/dryer, and central air unit all 1993 models all pretty much OEM all whirlpool or comfortmaker AC. New gas furnace 98% done 4 years ago or so is an Amana (same as Goodman but tad bit better warranty) and got it installed all for under 2 grand smaller unit for smaller house. Most other installers wanted pushing 3K for a Trane or Bryant.
I can see all the other appliances, etc. being near 30 years old now clunking out all at once one of these years.

Well, the new stuff is not like the old. I don't remember how old the HVAV system was at my previous house when it was replace (heatpump with natural gas backup), but I suspect it was original to the house so, maybe 20 plus years old.
The one in my current house (just installed about 10 or 11 years ago) is a top of the line Byrant system (heat pump with gas back up). Parts are under warranty but...........
Had to replace the "condenser" I think it was, because the original one was leaking because it was carbon steel. Free part $1,000 or so to do the work.
Just was told last month on the six month inspection I contracted for that the "aspirator" (thing that exhausts the burned gas stuff outside) is beginning to rust. Its under contract/warranty so the part is free but I was told it would be $2,000 - $3,000 to replace because of where is it "located" in the system (have to tear it all apart).
When I replaced the part a couple of years ago, I got an estimate for a new system, again, top of the line system. It was about $12K installed. When I asked about the replacement cost last month (just a guess) I was told that the price increase was several thousand. So, maybe $15K to replace.
No, that do not make them like they use to, even though I try and buy the best I can afford.

March 4 - Gwen is starting her next to last chemo treatment today. Last one is 3 weeks from today. In general, she is doing great, except for a greater than usual (for her) fatigue. Tired enough that I used the wheelchair within the clinic for the first time (after I suggested it last time we were there). For you Facebook users - one of our friends does crotchet, and she has made Gwen a number of different head coverings. Pictures posted on her Facebook page, Gwen Cooper. She's wearing the "Little Orphan Annie" today .

TODAY is Gwen's last day of Chemotherapy !! And Sunday is her birthday.
So, our gaming group is all supposed to come tomorrow night for some tiramisu with a single candle on in celebration (Gwen doesn't usually feel bad until Monday, and I expect next week will be another work from home week). I'm getting ready to leave to pick her up, and she is supposed to get to "ring the bell" that she is finished. There maybe some pictures on her facebook page.
The Dr said it will be close to a year before she is 100% recovered, but at least for now, no more .

I probably need to make an appointment and see what my primary care says. I've never needed BP meds before, but I'd rather take them and still be around....
