https://www.southfork.org/wheeler-geological-areaWas reading in the local rag this morning, and stumbled across an interesting article. Apparently a supervolcano right in my backyard was, "bigger than Yellowstone". According to Allen Stork, emeritus geology professor at Western Colorado University, the eruptions filled the Gunnison basin to the top of W Mountain with ash. "We would have been under 800 feet of ash here in Gunnison," he said. I was surprised to learn that the La Garita Caldera is just one of over a dozen calderas in the San Juans. Uncompahgre Peak and Cochetopa are calderas. Silverton and Lake City both sit within calderas. I guess the Wheeler Geologic area can only be accessed via 4x4 and by foot. It looks spectacular. I plan on checking it out.

It is spectacular (and interesting). However, don't tell anyone else about it lest the lunatics try to saddle us with a new green deal, electric cars, and no coal or oil or gas; just windmills, solar panels, fairy dust and leprechaun farts to prevent all future volcanoes.

We've even got some little hoodoos on the county road going to our neighborhood, but nothing as cool as these. I wasn't even aware of this area. Another hidden gem to check out. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Ya, if you're out this way look me up, easy access to the ones in Borrego, though a Valk might struggle in the sand getting there, if I remember right you need to barrel through certain areas in the car. A sand rig would be cake but a car or truck seems to do just fine. I don't think our bikes dig the sand action very much

We sure have some pretty country around us and some pretty rough country.
There are a few very volatile areas and that one and Yellowstone are just 2 of them. I've read where they are overdue to erupt again.

My nephew majored in Geology at Ft. Lewis College in Durango. He said a professor explained that the magma channels feeding our calderas were actually drawing from the Yellowstone "pool". Apparently that pool is more massive than they ever imagined. The La Garita eruption 28 million years ago pumped out three times the ejecta of the largest Yellowstone eruption. The world is in a constant state of flux, and we're allowed to temporarily reside here at Mother Nature's whim. Ask any dinosaur you know.

When it or they let go its supposed to be one of the biggest ever. It'll destroy the western portion of the country. I have to wonder if the green new deal will address this.
