I do that at every known opportunity.

As the father of two adults children who have both served, one still is, I can't tell you how proud I am of them.   Both have risked as much as I ever did plus some.

So true many thanks to both, and a heart felt thanks to the families of those who lost loved ones. I pray and hope in this time that we can continue to give thanks to the ideals and people that made this country great.

Police and firefighters belong in the group.   Lately emergency medical workers deserve an honorable mention.

It's a bad comparison.

Jesus Christ came to Earth with the specific purpose of laying down His life for me.

The American soldier agreed to RISK his life among other purposes.  Also by specifically pointing to soldier one leaves out the Airmen, Sailors and Marines.

It is something to think about.

When I think about the word soldier I include the whole military as a whole. From foot soldier to the military clerks. They all have a duty and deserve honor.

I understand the distinction between the different branches, but many think soldier refers to all.  BTW you left out Coast Guard.  Wink

Members of the Coast Guard are sailors.  Some refer to them (disparagingly) as Shallow Water Sailors.

Technically Willow is correct but having served in both the Marines and the Army, I would suggest  to thank the military covers all.

The last Coastie I spoke with would challenge anyone referring to his service as Navy but, it's all good, they all serve with pride.   Some just live a lot better both in CONUS and when deployed.   Creature comforts do make a difference.

I was always told that if you (I) were free to thank the "military" that have fought to defend those freedoms.   If you can read and it's english, thank a teacher.  Wink

Just for grins, I would point out that I performed a site visit to the USCG Loran station in Kargabarun Turkey, sometime in 1987, and their creature comforts were not exactly wonderful.  Although they were located on a decent beach and had a small sailboat and rowboat to play with.  One officer and a dozen or so enlisted.  Like all (but one) US military operating locations in Turkey (17 at the time), the base was secured by Turks (under NATO SOFA agreement).  The officer was the only one without a beard, and they were a pretty scruffy outfit.

Entertainingly, later that year, the officer smuggled an exotic local belly dancer into the facility for a unit party (security violation), and an unfortunate picture of him appeared in the local newspapers with his happy face buried in the dancer's bosom.  It embarrassed both the Turks and the Coast Guard and the poor guy got relieved of command and shipped home, though he was only trying to do some morale building for his men.  No one ever explained how the belly dancer was going to compromise a loran signal or facility.

1963

In 1993, the 625 foot beacon tower collapsed from ice and snow, leaving the far east of the Med uncovered by loran signal.  Three other loran stations for the Med were; two in Italy, and one in Barcelona Spain.  It was rebuilt, and the station was transferred to the Turks in 1994.

An evolution of World War II technology (LORAN was an acronym for long-range navigation), Loran-C was considered obsolete by many once GPS was widely available.  In 2010, after the US Coast Guard declared that it was no longer required, the US and Canada shut down all their Loran-C beacons.

That looks like a Holiday Inn compared to some of the places I've been assigned.   Yes, creature comforts do make a difference and some of the services live a much more comfortable life style than others.

My 2nd tour in SEA was at U-Tapao, the big B-52 base on the Gulf of Siam in Thailand.  I was a BB Stacker (bomb loader on the BUFFs).  Our squadron commander threw a morale-booster party for the munitions squadron off base.  There were mostly-naked dancing girls and the door prize was a hooker.  The winner declined and she was passed off to some unmarried E-3 (or so).  Obviously if you are going to partake of the door prize you wouldn't want it to be known to the squadron, "God and His brother".  There may have been some repercussions for the commander for this less than spaghetti-hat level command decision.  I could imagine if some wives back in the world got wind of it, and the SHTF.  Pretty good party though there weren't any openly-toked doobies.  Weapons troops had a rep for being wild & crazy...  This was before there were women in their ranks - now there are female 462's so I'm sure such a party would be much tamer now.
