My wife's birthday is coming up. I find the information available on this board to be very amazing (at least compared to other similar boards). So...... My wife and I were in Blue Ridge, GA this past week. As we walked to find a breakfast spot one morning we past a shop that sells wind chimes. They had the one linked below outside. I know little about the chimes and how they are mounted and used so that is my question. This set of chimes is 90" tall. It is from Music of the Spheres, Austin, TX I know it must be hung in a free space but .... I see pictures of them hanging from the ceiling of a covered porch. Or hung outside hanging from???? I was thinking about making a little building, basically maybe 16'x16' using some 12' 6"x6" and 2x's mounted on edge for the roof (open roof design). Would have to have it maybe 10' high (depending on the length of the chimes which say they are 90" long). Might be a bit big (16'x16'). Any thoughts would be appreciated. And lots of sound proofing I did wonder about that. The porch mounting would be noisy. The yard mounting would not be that noisy inside the house. Wonder how the wildlife would be affected. Maybe require some additional reflection

I may just give that a try. Always wanted to put some speakers outside and maybe have a personal outdoor theater.

Don't put them anywhere near your bedroom unless you want to be notified what the wind is doing at any time during the night.

I don't know, hanging them in the bedroom with the ceiling fan on low might be relaxing. (but not between the bed and bathroom) I think the thing to do is not start out building a fancy hanger. First, you just experiment hanging them makeshift temporarily here and there to get an idea of the sound around (or IN) the house (and with wind). Once you find the location that works best for sound (not looks), then you decide how you want to hang them permanently. All my big oaks are elevated at least 30 feet before limbs start, but a lower tree limb might be good, maybe on a line through a pulley to a cleat so they could be easily lowered to clean/oil and raised back up. Pulley secured to limb with an eye screw. I suppose the same mount could be used to a stand off pole secured to some outbuilding or other structure.

Jess, something like that crossed my mind as well although I was going to hang them from a tripod of 4x4x16 or 12's. That would allow me to move them around to find a "preferred" location.
Thanks for the thought.

That is exactly the problem, what sounds beautiful when you walk by, at 2am or when you want to enjoy and quite time all of sudden becomes noise. The constant ringing of wind chimes rather than being a retreat can be a nuisance. Just imaging having music playing 24/7 even the best gets old.
Was looking at some yesterday in a store and thinking of getting them, since I do like them. Stood there for a moment thinking and then, nope.
No matter where you hang them have the ability to stop the ringing.

I have repaired and built several wind chimes. The striker and wind paddle can be adjusted for size for sensativity and tone. Many materials can be used. Copper , brass , bamboo , PVC pipe , steel tubing , exhaust tubing. Varying length create different tones. Different strikers create different sounds. da prez

Thanks for the comments. You know, I forgot, unit now that RAMs was in the process of making windchimes out of old gas bottles.
Still under consideration. Was going to get if for my wife for her birthday but when I mentioned it she did not say "OH WOW!!!". So... still contemplating.

Was going to get if for my wife for her birthday but when I mentioned it she did not say "OH WOW!!!". So... still contemplatingThis is my life. I could always buy my dad and brothers (and all males) great gifts they always appreciated. Clothes always fit. I could never buy my mom, sister, wives (2) (or any females) gifts they appreciated. I mean aside from the obligatory flowers, candy, and nice card. Clothes never fit, and stuff wasn't right. I would never spend on jewelry (period), besides the obligatory rings. So I settled back on the old Franklins and Grants, which were always appreciated. Though that one Christmas I got the wife a big box of condoms and some lottery tickets, I did get some good laughs. However, never make the mistake of getting them an iron, or vacuum cleaner, or washer, or lawn mower, or a shovel. They don't think that's funny at all. (and some of that stuff can hurt when they throw it at you) What women want.................... baffling men for millennia.

Jess,
Ahhh yes! I might get her an orchid. I got her one for mothers day two years ago. She tried to keep it going but this spring it died. There is a local orchid nursery in Newberry. May jus take for for a bike ride and stop by.

Why not make one. It is not as hard as you may think. The one I made has same sound but a lot shorter and smaller pipe. The sound is very quiet not annoying. When wind gets blowing harder the striker will get outside the tubes and not make much noise. Calms down it gets back to center. My wife picked out the cords and played on the piano (12 different ones). The one I picked was in cord c3 c4 c5, all were 6 keys for 6 pipes. Then I did 4 different lengths in the c3/c4, c4/c5. There was a total of 24 different lengths from 37 3/4 to 15 3/8. I made 4 different strikers and 6 different sails before i found the best sound. If you want to try it let me know i can help. Look at the cheap ones in stores all the strings are attached at the same point on the pipes and the striker is centered totally wrong.
