I bought a desmog kit months ago thought being, if I don't need it, it should go. Those vacuum lines and valves can only cause problems.  Finally desmoged the Valkyrie couple weeks ago.

Not hard to do. What was interesting was the condition of all the rubber hoses. Not good. The crankcase hose running back up to the air filter housing was shot, all oily and even with clamps was dripping oil all over everything. Fuel tank vent hose was all brittle. Etc.

My point to this is, if you have recently bought a Valkyrie you most likely want to take the tank and the air box off and check all the hoses in there. Every bit of rubber. Whether you desmog or not is up to you. The actual valves looked good and functional on my bike, it was all the hoses that were questionable.

Performance wise my bike now seems to be a little harder to start but I swear it's smoother from 2000-3000 RPM. I very well may have had a vacuum leak somewhere. Might be in my head????

With the heat these engines create, the rubber does eventually dry out. I have found only the vacuum lines and caps are a problem. The boots to the air box have always felt normal on all my valks. I used vacuum caps from the auto parts store once, didn’t last a year. Now I use red eyes products as they seem to last.

I replaced the vacuum lines and caps with their Viton equivalents (Redeye, I believe) on both of my current Valkyries.

The other lines and hoses are checked regularly. So far, no issues at 20 and 22 years age, respectively.

If I lived in a hotter, drier climate I'd inspect and possibly replace much more frequently.

The metal tubes to the bottom of the heads on my 99' IS where almost fully plugged with carbon.

Another item to check if you insist on keeping them on the bike. Can they be cleaned? Replace.

I had the same result with the bottom metal lines on my bike. Lots of carbon build up but I don't think that would actually effect anything?

Next thought was this. If those lines are getting carbon build up are the lines causing carbon build up inside the engine somewhere? On the valves?

If you have an ultrasonic cleaner that's large enough, it'll clean those right out.

I did a hi-speed desmog and left those lines in place, cut them off and folded them over.  Instead of replacing with plugs.  On Deerslayer and Jade.  George was desmogged with a kit.  No difference in functionality, just in appearance.

Your "pet rooster", i.e., petcock, has nothing to do with the smog equipment. It doesn't get its vacuum from there, it's taken off either #6 on the left or #5 on the right...totally separate from any smog junk.

May want to check the intake runner O-rings.  They have been known to fail.  The intake to runner boots and clamps may need some tlc.
